I am liking this rifle (1942 M38)but man is it loud! Its a shooter alright. I shot a two inch group with 5 shots, at 25 yards. The group was 6 inches low, but hey; I can fix that. :-D The trigger takes some getting acustomed too; it feels ugly, but shoots nice.

mine too, I was using some surplus Romanian ammo and besides the kick I got a two foot flame, with this gun you can kill your deer and cook it all at the same time. Maybe I could fiil some hollow points with BBQ sauce.

"Barbeque sauce in the hollow point" ..............

That's good!

My brother will enjoy that tip!

I loaded S&B boxer brass cases with standard rifle primers and mid-range doses of Varget with a J-word bullet (150 gr. Winy Power point) and thus far ....... minute of golf ball at 45 yards with factory irons.

It's simply amazing that something that looks so crude can perform so well!

It took about 2 months from purchase to actaully shoot the dern thing. The weather was so damn cold, too cold to shoot if that is possible. Which is saying something cause I do the bulk of my shooting in the winter months.

Ivan,

You are NOT living up to your moniker !!! :D :D :D. Those mild, wimpy Alaskan winters shouldn't be a problem for anyone named Ivan ! :D :D :D

(Just kidding, of course. I know how brutal the weather can be up in your neck of the woods. I have to confess, though, I am envious. Brutal weather or no....you are living in, I think, some of the MOST beautiful country in the world ! You lucky (cold) guy, you !)

Well if it's so cold ........... Why are the polar bears said to be drowning due to melting ice????

It can't be BOTH ways!

It's caused by global warming, which is caused by the california state legislature, who raised gas taxes due to reduced consumption of california drivers, which caused the drivers to get constipated, thereby causing excessive carbon monoxide gas in the atmosphere......

Dang, I thought global warming was caused by a prolonged election cycle. That is what they mean about gas being released into the atmosphere -- isn't it?

Well, this was coldest winter in the 8 I spent in the Arctic. In a normal winter the tempertures range from 0 to 30, the majority of time, with a day or 2 of minus 50. From around Dec 7th till March 7, with the exception of a few days. it was cold, usually around negative 30 or colder. The cold was bone crushing. It was negative 30 for weeks man. It was crazy cold.

My buddy was shooting his M38 at the same time. He was all over the target; the rifle kicked too much for him.[smilie=1:

Well ..... even here in Central Washington it is cold enough in the winter to wear several layers of clothing ........ and that dampens recoil.

Are you saying your friend did not have a heavy coat on during the long winter cold snap?

A so so coat will turn down the recoil for me.

I shoot my best shot groups in the winter, because of the heavy layers of cloths. I am guessing my buddy does not have enough shooting experience. In retrospect the recoil of the M38 is not as bad as my 3006.

I would agree that an M38 (kickers that they are) is off the mark as to recoil compared to a factory loaded '06.

I have been contemplating the Simms recoil pad starting with the M38 as it's the lightest of my Ruskies.

Notice the recoil pad I installed on my M38. I have found my M38 pleasant to shoot with my reloads. :)

If you don't want to alter your milsurp with a permanent recoil pad get a slip on pad and use it for your range sessions. I'm not particularly recoil sensitive but sometimes I like more than a tee shirt between me and the rifle. I think the large size will fit most military rifles.

I have a couple Steyr M95s that put the short Mosins to shame in the recoil department. They're the reason I bought a slip on. Helps with length of pull too.
