I tried drying brass in the toaster oven for the first time, must of left it in too long. They were not red hot, but the entire case has darkened.
I'm thinking I should trash this batch. What is the consensus here?
Thanks,
Ed

Most certainly in the scrap bucket they go. With the current ultra low price of 9mm brass (almost free) theirs no reason to even take the chance of using them..

A swager will certainly take it.

Cut them back, drop lead in em. Swage them into bullets

Too impatient to simply air dry for a day?

I usualy put them on top of the boiler for a couple days, summer/winter system.
I just wanted to try it. I have an old toaster oven I used for Sculptamold clay.

"To the dung heap with them!"
Thanks,

You don't really have to go so high on the heat. You only need about 110 degrees to dry cases. If they got that hot I would trade someone on here the swages boolits.

I will not argue not to trash em. But will share my experiences heat drying. I cleaned a bunch of 32-20 in my ultra sonic cleaner set them on top of woodstove to dry. 1/2 hr later they are all the dye looking I figure they got to hot and annealed themselves. The. I got to wondering about that brass won't anneal even any til over 425 degrees. So I stuffed the extractor groove of some 243 with 425 degree tempilaq set on woodstove to see. It still hadn't melted 36hr later so I hadn't annealed that 32-20 either just looked funny. Anyway. Good luck

If the brass got really "clean" then it will oxidize rather quickly in a toaster. I have had that happen before, and I KNOW the temp didn't get anywhere near high enough to anneal. That being said, if you have ANY doubt, consider them candidates for bullet jackets. Replacing them is very cheap peace of mind.

How hot did they get? I agree that the "squeaky clean", bare metal brass will tarnish rather quickly...
