Just finished sanding/refinish on the stock. Barrel and action were a mess. Degreased, polish and a reblue.....She's ready for those CA black tails!

Savage makes a re-pop after market side mounted scope mount available on gunparts. I plan to keep it retro. I have a vintage mint Ted Williams Sears 4x scope ready to go out of the original box! This one will look good next to my record player and that old S&W model 29!

Looks great! My brother Dave has an old bolt action .30-30, haven't seen it in years but I remember it had some kind of "collar" thing at the front of the receiver/rear of the barrel. I wonder if it's one of those. I bet he hasn't fired it in 40 years.

I would need to check, but think I have the same rifle. I haven't shot it much because it has a loose spot in the barrel and is not accurate. Thinking of having it reported to 375 Win for Mi deer hunting. It may be too long a case to comply with the law , so I might need to get a new barrel and have it short chambered. I can always trim brass for it.

The Savage model 322, 325, 340 & 840 all came with pre-tapped holes drilled on the left side of the receiver. There about 12 holes altogether. There should be flat head threaded plugs screwed in to preserve the threads and keep them clean. It should have a 5 round magazine as well. If you guys have one, Numrich has parts for them. They are worth the time to tune up as they are accurate little tack drivers.
Amazingly, who ever had it before me bedded and free floated the barrel which further accurized this gem.

Good rifles don't need to cost a fortune. Plus, you get the satisfaction of reviving a classic.

As a hand loader the bolt action and single shot 30-30s become very attractive. No tube magazine restricting bullet or boolit selection.
I hope to "run into" a 340 or one of the other models one of these days.

Good job! Nice looking rifle. A teenage hunting buddy back in the late '50s had the Stevens version, blonde stock, butter knife bolt handle. It was a real tack driver. People must have really liked them because you don't see many for sale.

Great looking 340! Like my Granddaughter said...."What's a record player?" :D

They are such well made guns. I plan on holding on to this one. Make a few more memories with it before handing it off to my son.

It really cycles nicely with that 30-30 rimmed cartridge. Double extractors really grab the casing well. I couldn't agree more.

I like, very nicely redone. Great to outfit it within it's time, really reminds us of our past! I don't have one of those but hunt with my old guns every year for just that reason, an escape from this modern world to simplier times.

Gotta admit to being a fan. I have a 340 in .30-30 and a Stevens 322 in Hornet. Great rifles that were under appreciated in their time.

I just couldn't see a modern optic sitting on top of this gem. Plus, that old Sears-Roebuck optic was a match made in heaven with this rifle.

I agree. I have a few nice long guns, but you can't beat the pleasure felt when you breath life back into an old classic like this.

So true, I have some very nice shotguns, love pretty wood. But the last one I bought is a 28ga Stevens 94 single. Just a nice simple classic that brings pleasure in it's simplicity.

I've been wanting one of these for a while. The timing of availability and my jingle just don't seem to go together.

I would like to find one of these and have it rebarreled to 7-30 waters. I don't know why, I just do. Nice rifle.

So I emailed my brother, his rifle is a Stevens 325C. Sure looks a lot like the Savage. Wonder if Savage & Stevens were like Marlin & Glenfield.....

Yes, exactly. If you look at the single shot shotguns, you find the Savage-Stevens model 94 has numerous variations and it came with Savage on it, Stevens on it, JC Higgins, Ted Williams (I think) and a whole host of other names that was stamped on them and sold from various stores.

Stevens was the original, they were bought out by savage. I have an original stevens with the Manlicher type bolt handle. Came with a scope mount. They are pretty restrictive as to what will fit. End bell has to clear the sights, has to fit between the rings, rear bell has to clear the mount and proper eye relief. I had to dig thru the measurements to find one that would fit. Even then had to mod the mount in the back for the bell to clear.

It is nearly identical to my 340. A few very minor differences. Sights, mount holes.....other than that it is the same.

I do know that Stevens and Savage made rifles under proprietary names like Sears-Roebuck, Ted Williams etc. They were not stamped with Stevens or Savage logos. They are identical in quality as they rolled off the same machining equipment.

If any of these rifles pop up, grab them! If the bores are clean, stocks are decent and they aren't too far gone, they are well worth restoring. I really enjoyed tuning up the one I posted. Eventually, they will be a distant memory and rarely seen. Enjoy them while they are around.......and snag 'em if you see them!!!!

My .30-30 is a Sears variant. Great shape except for a big chunk of wood broken by the safety. I need to whittle a new piece and glue in in and refinish the stock. Doesn't interfere with anything.

My Stevens 325 looks just like the one pictured with the butter knife bolt handle. I thought a Manliccher stock on it would be nice, but that big magazine at the balance point would throw the looks off and I don't have the time or skills to carve one out anyway.

My 30/30 is a sears model 101xxxxxxxxxxx, my 222 is a revelation. Iirc they were sold by monkey wards.

Mine's labeled as a Springfield 840. I launched a quest for it after seeing a friend's 325 with the butter knife bolt handle, really liking the idea of a .30-30 that's NOT a lever action - I'm not really a fan of lever actions. I was stoked to find the 840 with its round knob, because I'm not so big on butterknives either. I went with the B-Square mount, Leupold PRW rings, and a Weaver 2-7x28 rimfire scope that moved over when my CZ .22 got upgraded to a Leupold. With its birch stock, stamped bottom metal, and barrel nut, it is unquestionably the ugliest rifle I own, but it's light and impressively accurate.

Right now it's on a list of things that I'd like to fill my second deer tag with after relieving the pressure of the first with the "old reliable" Barnes-loaded .30-06. I've got three seasons before the Condor Cuddle lead ban takes full effect, and would like to drill something with a cast bullet in the meantime.
