Bud's has a CVA Hunter in 35 Remington for $170. Sounds too good to be true. Does anybody own one of these rifles? It it a pile of junk or worth owning?

I have never shot one of those but my neighbor and his son both have one and speak very highly of theirs.

I bought one from Bud's for $160. Definitely worth owning. The chamber is a little rough and the throat is short, but overall good quality and a great trigger. Better quality than my Handi rifle.

At the same cost of a Handi, the CVA is a good deal. At $160 it is a steal. I bought one several months ago. You get a free scope mount and hammer extension. Because .35 Rem ammo is non-existant, I reamed the chamber to .358 Win. The trigger is heads and above what you get with H&R handi.

If you can get .35 Rem ammo, this is a steal.

Here's a source for 35 Remington cases.

I'm tempted to get a couple of hundred just to have an excuse to buy another rifle!

I bought my grandson a CVA Hunter , 22" barrel, 30-06 Springfield.

For a 5.8 lb. rifle, it is a nail driver !

Ben,

If that scope mount/rings is too high, call CVA to see if you can swap it out for a lower one. They will do so when the gun is new.

Ben

Yes, it is high.

I ordered a pair of weaver bases and a set of lower rings already from Midway.

They arrived today.

I can't figure out why these are so blasted high ?

Ordered one today. $165 was the lowest make an offer bid the system would accept. We will see how it does. I might just ream it to 358 Win.

A freind of mine has (had) one in .35 Remington. Brought it to me and afte a quick trip through the lathe, Manson Reamers make great tools, it's now a .358 Winchester.

My impressions were very very good. I feel it's extremely well made and way ahead of the Handi rifle.....which ain't hard being as H&R is now defunct.
If you have the scratch, buy it! You won't be sorry.

This sounds way too good to be true. Let me guess: scope mount only/no sights provided and plastic stock only? Still a good deal but would require some changes to make me bite.

There are models with nicer stocks......price reflects it too.

But yes, all synthetic [it appears] and scope mounts.

The higher end models run pricey at nigh $700 but they use Bergara barrels.

I couldn't stand it any longer. I had to get one, so it's on the way. I can't believe what the guys on gunbroker are asking for ammo and brass...

A friend told me he seen one in 300 blackout , what are the calibers you can get ? Think he said Buds had it for $169.00 . Anyone know what all calibers they come in ?

Go to the cva website, they have several different calibers like 35 Whelen, 7mm-08, 243, 44 mag, etc

FYI: Midsouth has 35 Rem ammo in stock. It's not cheap, but it's there. I ordered a box just to have but plan to order brass from the link posted above in post #5 made by Grumpa.

http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/0000382735/35-Remington-200-Grain-LEVERevolution-Ballistic-20-Rounds

ETA: I was thinking about reaming to 358 Win also, but think I can get a 200 grain RF boolit to do everything I need in 35 Rem for blacktail deer and black bear out this way. I'd have to gear up for either caliber so I might just leave this one as is in 35 Remington.

Mine in 44 Mag is disgustingly fun to shoot. It carries well in the woods, shoulders well, feels great and drives tacks. I think i like it. I've only shot it out to 100 yards but its plenty accurate for hunting with my cheap hand-me-down scope. And dont get me started on shooting 44 Specials. Its pretty quiet and recoils like a wood stocked 22. I'd like one in the pistol too. I hust cant decide between the 44 and 357 mag. Definitely worth the look for a budget minded shooter

I picked my 35 Remington CVA Hunter today. It really looks good, bore, fit-and-finish and all. I'm impressed. If it shoots as good as it looks then I'll be a happy camper.

I've been eyeballing CVAs for a while. Academy stocks them. I'm confused why 7mm-08 is a frequent offering. I thought that this caliber had become less popular but do understand that it would more gentle than some others. Anybody shooting it with cast bullets?

I took mine to the range today after mounting a Chinese Weaver scope I mistakenly bought on eBay. I didn't have any 35 Remington ammo so last night I took the few empty cases I have and just filled them to the neck with Trail Boss and seated an RCBS 35-200. Results were quite good, and the trigger is much better than the H&R guns. I feel like I really got my money's worth and more.

The CVA website lists them in 300 Blackout. I already have a H&R in Blackout, but if I could get one of these guns at the same price as my 35 I would probably buy two of them!

Buds only has 35 Whelen now.

I changed my scope mounts on my 30-06 from this :

http://i1155.photobucket.com/albums/p545/Ben35049/023_zps8imawjot.jpg (http://s1155.photobucket.com/user/Ben35049/media/023_zps8imawjot.jpg.html)

To this :

The above is a Leupold , 1 X - 4 X, Vari X II in low scope rings.

The one piece rings / base that come with the rifle are just way too high for my taste.

Bud's has a Scout (next higher model) in .300 BO for $200. Here is the ad. Caution.........look this up on the CVA website and make sure that Bud's has the same gun.

It looks like a close out price.

Yeah, I was just coming here to post that and you beat me to it. There's no picture so I can't see if it has a threaded barrel. I took a chance and ordered one anyway...I can thread it myself if I have to.

FYI the buy it now price threshold was either $193 or $195. My $193 bid didn't work, but $195 did.

I have a 357 Handi . . . mind you . . . I don't have any complaints on it other than the weight of the barrel . . . what can I say . . . I'm older and don't like to lug around heavy guns! :-)

I haven't had a chance to see the CVA "in person" or handle one. From the photos . . . the barrels look like they are a lot lighter than the H & R? (not a bad thing . . . ). Is that an accurate statement or is the CVA as heavy as a H & A?

The CVAs look like a very reasonable priced rifle that would afford a person a lot of fun both in plinking and hunting.

EDIT: I just looked at CVA's site - I wonder what they don't do these in 30-30 Winchester? (Or did I miss it?). Seems like one in 30-30 would be a decent one to have. Am I missing something?

I have the CVA Scout V2 in 44 mag. It is lighter than the H&R, but still a substantial rifle. The stockwork is almost weightless, the barrel carries most of the weight even after fluting. I like it a lot.

Wow! That is a mistake at Bud's. I googled the model number and the CVA website lists the CR4130 as a Stainless rifle, 16.5" barrel with a $465 MSRP! If that is what you get for $195, WOW!

At the NRA convention in Nashville this year, I tried to convince the folks at the CVA booth that they should jump into the void left by H&R going out. Specifically, if they made the Hunter or Scout in both .30-30 and .357 Mag they could not keep up with orders. They don't read this website.

That's a Scout V1, which has been replaced with the Scout V2. It sill looks like a nice rifle. I really like my Hunter in 35 Remington.

The Scout V1 appears to be the same thing as a Hunter, except for barrel fluting. The Scout has a fluted barrel and the Hunter doesn't. I've got a Scout V1 and a couple Hunter's. The Scout V2 has a different action release and maybe some other changes (please correct me if I'm wrong-never handled a V2). I like them better than the Handi's, but I've only managed to find time shoot the Scout once.

For what it's worth, my hunter rifle came with the base/rings setup and is very low, similar in height to the picture posted above with the aftermarket rings. I scrounged a box of ammo and ordered some brass from Grumpa in the vendors section here. Can't wait to shoot it, just need a scope now.

jaysouth - thanks for sharing that. Interesting. To me, if the Handi is "done" - the 30-30 and 357 would sell well as they are both very popular calibers in that type of rifle. I'd snatch up a 30-30 in a heartbeat. Time will tell . . . maybe further down the road they'll wake up and realize there is a real niche there.

Thanks for sharing - greatly appreciate it!

I have the V1 or Hunter in a 29 slug gun. Its a mid weight barrel, between the H&R Ultra and the Tracker. For <$200, I cant complain. Shoots regular Foster slugs and the Saboted ones fine.

I have the V2 in the pistol form. In 300BO and 44mag, They are nice! Thinking of getting a 45/70 rifle and 357 mag rifle.
I like my single shots!

So, 3 months later I finally put a $45 Simmons scope on my 35 Remington CVA Hunter. Very impressed. The Hornady 200 grain FTX ammo shot into a ragged hole at 50 yards.

I didn't even bore-sight the scope, so I started at 25 yards with handloads made from Grumpa's excellent brass, Hunters 195 grain plain base cast bullet and 36 grains AA4350. I was on paper with the first shot, and dialed in with 5 or 6 more shots. I put three shots in the same hole at 25 yards and then started on the 50 yard targets. The first two shots were touching. After that the shots turned into more of a shotgun pattern.

I looked down the barrel and it was half occluded with unburned powder kernels. I shot 4 times over the new chronograph, a Caldwell, and stopped after 4 sad rounds: 1002, 973, 784, 781!

The FTX averaged 2238 fps with an extreme spread of 13 fps. That's 2224 ft lbs. muzzle energy and a TKO value of 22.89. Should be plenty for deer and black bear, maybe elk in close.

Ran out of time to try shots at 100 yards, but shot off the remaining handloads so I can start over again with another powder. I have since dumped the rest of my AA4350, as it finally went bad with the red dust, bad smell, etc.

Anxious to wring this one out more. At 6 pounds, it's really handy and even with the full power factory ammo it didn't kick much at all. At $160, it's the best buy on a quality firearm I've made in a long time.
