I was just gifted a bunch of Hi-Skor 700-X. Is anybody using this powder for handgun rounds?

I use 700-X in 45 ACP. Works well.

Works great in 38 Special wadcutters. Also good 30/06 cast loads of about 11 gr and 195 gr cast.

I use it in a lot of handgun loads. That is what all the load data books are for.

Get one and you will see how useful it is. Lyman Cast is perhaps the best for Pb.

Anyone near Reno want to trade me pistol powder for pistol powder, I have all types but want to narrow down my choices and I am looking for 700x, 800x and Tightgroup :)

I am now! 700X was the only pistol powder on the local Cabela's shelves. I saw data for 38 special, 9mm Luger and 45 acp, my most reloaded rounds, so bought a bottle.
Have loaded up some 9mm with a Lee 120 grain TC and going to test them out next range trip.
Should be fine, back in the day 700X and 200 gr. cast SWC was THE target load in 45 ACP!

I also was gifted 15# of 700X.
I have been using it in all my pistol and revolver loads, up to 44 Mag.
It meters a little funky but settled on the RCBS Little Dandy as the measure that throws the most consistent charges.
Free powder is always a good thing.
Enjoy the gift . It will serve you well....dale

I'm in the process of finishing up loading 6 lbs of 700x, the only thing I could find in the recent shortages.

It's a great powder, but with very large flakes. I found that it meters great once it settles in the powder measure. I used an electric toothbrush motor as a vibrator to settle the powder in the measure. It's amazing how much it compacts down. Once I get loading, the vibration of the press (Dillon 550) keeps the powder consistently settled.

I leave the powder in the measure, to keep it settled. I just add more powder to the top of the measure.

I agree that it works great in low pressure pistol rounds. It's bulky, so that helps in larger cases like .38 spl. I primarily load it in .45 ACP.

Once it's gone, though, I'm going back to more easily metered powders.

Ditto on the 45 ACP! I've used it with 200 gr cast SWC and JHP bullets. Load data usually claims max velocity in the high 800's range

I've been using 700X in my gallery loads for the .223 Remington . It worked very well for that and I agree , settle the powder in the measure first that adjust the measure .

I have settled on 700X as my future standard load for my .45 ACP. Mainly because it was the only "fast" burning powder I could find in 8# jug. I say future because I have been using "titewad" and still have a 1.5 lbs to use up! I'm still looking for a 8# of Titewad. If I find it I'll sell the 700X.

It's already yours , it doesn't eat anything, and you may need it again someday, better hold on to it and buy what you want when you can find it, this mess is getting better, but it could change anytime...

Good thought. I probably will hang onto it. No need to sell it... don't need the cash to eat! Thank goodness! Time to start "collecting" bullets and primers when I can catch them on sale.

Yep, I got hooked on the stuff when Bartlet was selling at as surplus. He said it was used in 50 cal. blanks. An older IMR loading manual had smokeless blank data for shotgun up to 10 gauge. The only issue I have had was metering on a Lee 1000 when the charge gets below about 3.6-3.9 range. So its still my 45 ACP powder, it my cowboy powder for 44 mag. and 45 Colt. It works in 9mm and others.

700X had been the target 12 shotgun powder for over 40 years in Remington shells and its what I use in AAs as well. I like it better than Red Dot. Winchester seems to change its shotgun powders every so many years its hard to keep up.

I have inherited several pounds of 700x from retired shot gunners. The keg I'm working out of now must be 45 years old.

We have used it extensively for mild loads in 38 Special, 44 Special, 44 Mag and 45 Colt. It is surprisingly clean in all but the 45 Colt, but cases clean up quite readily in the tumbler.

I will echo the advice of settling it in the measure before starting. When this is done, my measure can throw consistent 3.0 charges with ease.

When I was beginning to reload pistol in volume, 700X had just come out, and it was advertised as being easily ignited, bulking up well so it'd be less. sensitive to powder position in light loads. That sounded pretty good, so I picked up a pound and began loading. It actually worked out pretty much as advertised. I know this is heresy, but I've never loaded a grain of Bullseye! I just always stuck with what I knew, and stayed with 700X. I did fire some loads from friends that had been loaded with Bullseye, but my loads were more accurate and burned cleaner, so I just never felt the need to pick up any Bullseye. I've used it in light to moderately warm loads in .38, .44 mag and .45 ACP mostly, and for those applications it always worked very well. If you're not familiar with it, give it a try. You may just find it's a very useful propellant

As to its bulkiness, this is what makes some have problems with their powder measures, but tapping the hopper to settle it in the measure helps significantly with this and it measures well thereafter - I know 'cause I tried everything to get uniform throws, and tested with a scale a lot to find out what worked. Helped accuracy a little, too, but was mostly noticable at longish ranges.

700x and 800x perform so well for me that I can live with the extra hassle of weighing charges. What I do want is to learn is how to use both 700x and 800x with Lee dippers.

I use it for 12 gauge and just started it for 38 special. It doesnt meter great but a lot better than i expected. I was using an rcbs quick change powder measure and getting about +- 2 tenths maybe 3 tenths of a grain. It was mainly holding a variation of 2 tens.

I'll be using an RCBS Chargemaster with my loads.

I use 700X in the 38 special and 45 ACP. It works very well in both calibers, burns clean and no leading. It has also done well in 9mm for me but not as well as 4756. LLS

Have used 700X for the past 30+ years in everything from trap and skeet loads to pistol rounds of all kinds, I'll be sorry to see the last 12 lb keg get emptied!!! (BTW the last one was $86 shipping included, never see that again!) good stuff. You will like it. Just my .02 cents .
