Is it critical to trim rimfire jackets to a specific length for, say, 55 gr bullets, or can they be used as is.

Is there a chart for jacket lengths if trimming is required?

Thanks in advance

No trimming for me. Take a sample of various headstamps and you will find a variance in weight which will be a factor in how close you get to your 55gr target. Good luck

A 22lr case will make a 52-58 grain open tip bullet with no lead exposed, somewhere between 58-62 grains (depending on the case and the density of the lead core) it will become a lead tip.

^^THIS^^ I have made them from 55gr-58gr still with no lead exposed. Just adjust the core weight & sort jackets by weight if you are picky. They can vary a full grain+.

Here's something from Berger:

.224 - .600 length - 30, 35, and 40 gr bullets
.224 - .705 length - 50 and 52 grain bullets
.224 - .740 length - 55 grain bullets
.224 - .800 length - 60, 62 and 64 grain bullets
.224 - .930 length - 70 and 73 grain bullets
.224 - 1.000 length - 75 grain bullets
.224 - 1.060 length - 80 grain bullets
.224 - 1.125 length - 90 grain bullets

And bullet (Projectile) lengths for common Military rounds (these are OAL or bullets, not jackets).

Handy information there Mustang!

Are you able to add your information source/reference for the US Military post and Core Diam Weight (gr) Length (in) in the previous two posts above? I don't mind if you've measured these yourself or found them chiselled into a pair of stone tablets :) , just helps us in the future if we need to put them into context against other measurements or something changes.

The military measurements might also be interesting for comparison in terms of understanding if they have jacket length tolerances to begin with, especially for pulled or factory 2nd projectiles when they come onto the market. Were you actually sold a factory 2nd when it was advertised as an over-run or a pulled first grade projectile? Just thinking...again.

The issue with mil spec vs your home swaged, they are boat tail, your home swage are probably flat base, at least mine are. I think you are over thinking it a bit. Just adjust your core wt & sort your jackets. Bullets may vary 1-2gr, not a big deal, just sort those into groups & load accordingly.

When my core is seated in my 55 gr RF Case they measure anywhere from .720 - .690" depending on case brand. For most 55gr bullet I trim to .710" for HP. If I want a SP I go to .680". Actual finished bullet lengths 55gr .695" , 60 gr .710", 63 gr .720".
