Finishing up my 416 Taylor build and have an RCBS 416-350-FN mold on the way. I have seen people on this board mention that they load this boolit to 1200-1400 FPS using Unique but have never actually seen the charge weight listed. Anyone have loading data for Unique or 2400 they would share. Surely appreciate it! Thanks....

I don't load pistol powders in a rifle case. 5744 will work well for reduced loads. Why not shoot an 80% load that gets to used to the recoil and learn your rifle? I'm sitting a 400 cast at 2150.

Rusty,
I have to ask, after spending good $$$ on creating a special rifle in a fantastic (buffalo killing) cartridge, why would you want to turn it into a 44Magnum?

A good estimate for a starting load with Unique would be 17 gr. Let us know how it works.

Thanks oldblinddog, sounds like a reasonable place to start. Appreciate the info.

Hello RustyReel. I too plan on working up a safe load using Unique and a 300 to 350gr. bullet. I have that RCBS mould..but have not yet shot it. My rifle is a circa 1901 Watson Farquharson chambered in .450/.400 3 1/4" Why turn this big cat gun into a kitten? The Krupp steel brl. is stamped 60gr. Cordite 400gr. jacketed..so I'm not so worried about brl. or action strength..it's the 114 year old English walnut stock i'm concerned about. There is a very old wrist repair..thru bolt just in back of action..very professionally done..diamond shaped escutchions inletted, case colored as well as thru bolt & all are engraved to match action engraving...factory? Anyway, when I recieved rifle, it was middle of a very cold and dry winter..after about a week, a narrow short crack was visible thru checkering in wrist. I brought it to my professional stock making friend, he used threaded rods in wrist & "dog-bone" shaped inlets and filled all with glass..all work was underneath top & bottom tangs..you have to know where to look in checkering to even see repair. But now I'm "gun shy" about using heavy loads. Looking only for light recoil, shoot to sights accurate loads for 50 to 100yd. target shooting. I have tried all slower powders including IMR3031, 4198, 5744 & TrailBoss..all gave pretty stout recoil with 300gr. cast. Hoping Unique will do the trick..have to be careful though with that big case. Best of luck with your .416.
