My thoughts have turned to a 40 cal HP mold. After really having good luck with a NOE 452 230 HP mold it got me to thinking why are not more 40 cal molds more like that round nose FP profile than than a TC design? Seems it would feed about as well as a TC, at least in 1911's I've had no issues where TC bullets are more finicky.

Maybe if this is a good idea to do a 180gr 40 cal HP mold with the cup point pins and the flat pins it would be around 190 or 195 gr. I'm thinking something without the crimp grove, never understood why those were on semi auto pistol bullets. Thoughts? Worth investigating a group buy?

I have that mould and have used it successfully in 45 Colt as well as 45 ACP - nice boolit! A 230 grain HP for the ACP is a fine idea. The crimp groove is on there to use it in the AR and Colt...

If you keep that crimp groove and match it with an appropriate nose length, then it would likely work pretty good in my 38-40 rifles and I would be interested. It should still be great in intended 40/10 autos too. Never understood why so many auto shooters worry about having a crimp groove on their boolit....

Perhaps this thread should be in the group buy discussion section??

For me it seems a hinderance on a taper crimp bullet. Too easy to roll the top of the case in since it it over the groove. I feel a taper crimp that head spaces on the mouth should not have a crimp groove.

It's there as a dual purpose bullet for 40/10 & 38-40. Most RNFP designs work fine in the 40. It was designed from day one though, to feed a TCJHP. So it makes sense that lead bullets would have a sim profile. I have never found TCFP finicky at all, regardless of caliber.

A taper crimp die should not roll crimp period. In any case, you should be able to set up your die to accomplish the desired function without issue.

NOE has the 403 200gr WFN that looks like what you're asking for. It casts a 200 gr FP or a 183gr HP, and is available in plain base of gas check versions, as well as both aluminum and brass versions too. Oh Thanks! I guess I overlooked the 403 sizes completely.
