300 grain LEE boolit, and 15 grains of blue dot. Seems high, but apparently well under max for a +p load based on Sierra 5th anniversary.

Thanks!

Alliant lists 10gr Bluedot under a 300gr as max for non +P. FYI, they no longer even list that load in their guide.

+P specific. Looking for +P.

Google yields alot actually on non +p bluedot. Only sierra it seems yields information on +p and 300 grains.

awesome. I think I read on this site from an older member that the max was up around there. 15 sure seemed high though given most discussion of data is not +p (actually prolific, just not +p) is 12 grains with a 250 grain bullet. Sounds like 15 with a 300 grain boolit and 16 with a 250 grain boolit, if accurate, is chasing heavy loads without chasing gun damage.

I'll load some up at 13 14 and 15 grains, hopefully I'll hit the ballpark for accuracy in there!

Sounds stout! What's your velocity guess?

No h110 to play with? If you got any aa#9 left, im looking at an 18.8 gr load just under 30kpsi for 1280 fps.

Is this is for an old vaquero?

I dunno how youre handling it, but those plowhandle grips sure dig into my palm with a pinky-under grip and heavy loads. Gotta get that callous built, i guess. The pachmayrs/hogues are lovely in comparison, at least the way i am trying to hold the gun

no guess. the objective is test 15 or 25 yard accuracy and not blow the gun up. I'll test velocity when I fine tune at 50 yards. Loads are at 10, 12, 13, 14, and 15 grains powder.

I don't want to use H110 simply because I won't be able to find it for 2-3 years starting in November 2016. Better to qualify less popular powders. If we can really say that about bluedot...

plowhandle will be fine. I own a BFR. I sprained my wrist two weeks after I bought that thing by teacupping it and couldn't shoot for 3 months. Now my forearms are iron. hands are iron from doing real work at home. As we all here do.

Large frame vaqueros. two matching in a set. They will get ALOT of love over the coming months. half the internals will be replaced, the barrel will be gauged for restrictions, the cylinder throats matched, new base pins, mirror polish on the trigger, high power wolff springs, it goes on. If I have to shape the grip frame or replace and shape it, I'm game. Having two means I can shoot one if the other one is down for parts or work. :)

Not saying anything you didn't already know.

This is what the 5th Edition Sierra lists as max using THEIR 300gr JSP.
A 16" Model 94 Winchester with 15.8gr of Blue Dot at 1450fps.
A 7 1/2" Blackhawk with 14.0gr of Blue Dot at 1000fps. Noted using CCI 350 primers.
A 10" Contender with 16.4gr of Blue Dot at 1150fps.

well, fiddlesticks. My boolits grew as they sat on the shelf so when I used them to load some 45 colt rounds they did not fit the throats, therefore they did not chamber. Now I need to pull 50 odd rounds and size ALL of my boolits back to where they should be and re-fit check, then re-load. er, reload again.

I tested one round of each load in the BFR just to see if primers would flatten, etc since the BFR can handle 65ksi all day every day for a few thousand rounds without maintenance. if this is recoil of 45+p, the vaquero is gonna be a sweetheart. I imagine the flip will increase a bit since the gun is shorter and lighter, but compared to 460 in a 5 lb gun it'll be soft.

Though I do see what you guys are saying about the plowhandle. Seems almost lihe the ruger plow handle is smaller than the BFR. Almost.
