I want to make a bullet trap and I'm looking for ideas, thoughts and comments. I want to hear everyone comments, ideas and thoughts so don't be shy. It won't catch the big .50, but I am going to make one in a 5 gallon bucket layered as follows:

Base - steel round of proper size, 3/8" thick
4-6" of sand
a cardboard round to determine if I need to sift the sand
compressed crumb rubber, perhaps with sand intermixed to fill holes as they occur
(Optional) some sort of self healing layer
lid with target attached

This trap shoild be portable, and based on what I read in a loooong thread I found, should fulfill my needs which max out at 7.62x54mmR. I also remember from that thread that 18-36" of sand will catch a .50 BMG if portability is not an issue.
