So who do you think won?!!!!! We have been having far too many squirrels at our feeder. So this morning I decided to put a bit of pressure on them. My handiest gun was my Marlin 1895SBL loaded with 420 grain boolits made of 50/50 COWW/Pure+ 2% pewter and powdercoated. Squirrel was shot from 25 yards out. Shot it right in the neck. I was quite surprised at the damage. It blew a big hole in the neck. In fact there was just a thin strip of skin holding the head on. Velocity is just shy of 1600 fps. The reason the damage surprised me was I shot a deer this year with the same load at 80 yards. 3/4 inch hole going in, and a 3/4 coming out.

I would "up" the bullet weight and the velocity to guarantee complete pass throughs.

And butt stroke it seven or eight times just to make sure.

You got lucky, should have fired a second round to make sure he went down.

I'm sure you could have stopped the bleeding with direct pressure. Tourniquets don't seem to work well in that area. :brokenima

Did you recover the slug from under the skin on the other side?Robert

Are you sending what's left to the taxidermist?

Might want to step up to a 500 grain slug for the next one. Just never know if that thing is going to attack you so more stopping power is better than less. ;-)

If you wound one do you have a back up? They can be dangerous when injured, your nuts might not be safe :o

LOL!!!! That one made me giggle!! But no I didn't send it to the taxidermist, and for some odd reason I couldn't find the slug under the off side skin!! Such a waste of energy:kidding:

I'm still having visions after the shot. War cry and butt strokes!

Talk about being under gunned!!! :kidding:

That thing coulda torn you to ribbons if you didn't get lucky putting it down with the first shot. Glad you made it out alive, Good shootin!

The 45-70 is alive and well... It's still protecting our Birds & Nut sacks 100+ years later from marauding tree rats and such.....:bigsmyl2:......:guntootsmiley:

I forgot to say:
Its good to hear that Boolit worked so good... I cast one similar, 460-430V so its nice to know I'll have a chance surviving an attack from Charging' Tree Rats!!! ;)

Thanks
