I called Hornady today as I have tries to decap some fired factory Hornet cases and have found that the small decapping pins I have will not go through the flash holes of the cases.
I was told that if I bought Hornady 22 Hornet brass the small pin would work but it would not work (as I had found) in the fired factory loaded cases.
Does anyone make a "super small" decapping pin or should I try experimenting with piano wire or some other material?
Is there another way to decap (other than the water method) that I might try?

Hi, I had the same problem so I took a spare decapping pin, spun it in the drill press and took a very fine file to it. worked fine

Thanks; I will try that.

Call Hornady. I ran into the same problem with an odd lot of .32 long cases with very small flash holes. They sent me another recapping assembly with pins for 6mm PPC cases. Problem solved.

OK, I'll call them again.

My Hornady 22Hornet die set works fine. What brand of dies are you using?

I have been using a Lee die set.

Are you sure the flash hole is small or is the depriming pin bent and striking the web.

Very good point. Might also check the brass to see if the flash hole is centered. I've had new brass that was missing the flash hole, or had brass chad hanging on the inside. Not all brass is good brass.

On some of my 22 Hornet brass, I use a Lee Collet die. No problem with the decapping pin there either.
