Hello Fellow Gunnutz! I managed to find a nice Savage 99 in 30-30 Winchester. The rifle appears to be in good condition for being around 78 years old!

I added a nice Machined Leupold scope base , so I dont have to drill and tap the reciever for the Weaver bases.
The bore seems almost new!

Hope you like the pictures:

This model has a butt plate hinge plate that gives some storage room (for a cleaning rod)? I have never seen a savage 99 option like this.

Who here has more history on these rifles? This will be a fun gun to shoot jacketed and cast bullets!

Congrats on a very nice score. Never seen a scope mount like that but I like it. Very functional and graceful, just like the rifle. No idea on the buttstock storage, how deep are the holes?

They go all the way to the buttstock bolt on one and the other goes about 3/4 the way to the butt stock bolt.

I bet I have looked at every model 99 I have come across for 35 years or so, and both of those are a first for me.

Never saw that style of buttplate, but it's obviously original. I really like that scope mount, I must keep my eyes out for a similar one.

Looks like you got a good one. It looks like my 99EG in .300 Savage which is a great rifle.

First for me as well - you got a good one from the looks - now how does it shoot is the question. Which mold are you going to try first?

Nice, nice, nice. I have a solid frame 20" barreled carbine 99 in 30-30. Mine is plain jane from 1936, great shooter. I wanted a receiver sight, I looked for several years finally found a NIB Lyman #30 1/2 tang sight. Paid more for the tang sight than a good scope and mount would have set me back but I like it better. Great guns, great cartridge. Mine is from 1936 and loves cast sized to .311

Both of those are new to me too! I believe they are both custom done by someone that knows what they are doing. So good, they look original. I'd love to find one in as good a shape as yours in .250 Savage. I am sooooooooooo jealous!!!

Nice buy. Lucky to find a old brass'er in such good condition these days. Whom ever owned this one took care of it no doubt.

That mount is made by a fellow named Lightfoot over at 24hourcampfire. I dont think you ll find Leupold on it anywhere. I like the buttplate and have not seen a 99 with that arrangement.

My 30-30 99 is a 1920's version, but lacks the cool buttplate.. :) I haven't sent a single cast down it, but it is a 1" 100 yd. rifle with jacketed. Nice score!

That looks great. Exactly the rifle I have been looking for for years and have yet to find, all I ever see are 99's in 300 savage, a caliber I don't want.

You have yourself a bargain! The Savage 99 is a lovely rifle: nice lines, very smooth, strong action and accurate. An older cousin of mine owned one and as a kid I coveted it. I would love to own one.

Took the old girl out today, and she shoots like a dream!

I rubbed the wood down with some boiled linseed oil. I Really rubbed it in with my hands, and warmed the wood to help it absorb into the wood. The grain came out quite nice! I am super happy with finding such an unexpected gem!

Very nice rifle! Usually at that age, they start looking a little rough, yours looks to be in great shape, congrats!

Was "Lightfoot" on the Savage 99 Forum? I am very interested in trying to get a mount like this for my Savage. Any idea of what he charges for this mount?Robert

Lightfoot makes them as orders come in. PM him for pricing info. I understand they're very reasonable. The are a good alternative to the No-Drill Stith mounts, both being the only game in town for those who wish to mount a scope on an unaltered 99.

Have you taken the butt plate off? I would be curious to see how the trapdoor was made (and then you can see if the stock and plate are numbered to the gun). What's the serial number? (X-out the last three numbers if you don't wish to broadcast the complete number.)

I suspect that plate to be craftsman made. Mill the opening in the original plate, and use a sacrificial plate of the same design to fabricate the lid. Fabricating the hinge and spring would be the tough part.

The linseed oil really made the wood pop! What a beauty!

The picture with the hinge open does not seem to show any sign of welding on the flap. Of course it might have been dressed off. But personally I suspect that this is a factory job. The way the plate is shaped and the flap hinges to it in the open shot does not appear to be the sort of method that a home shop machinist would use. In any event the proof would be in examining the hinge knuckle for signs of being welded.

That is a really nice Savage. I have been looking to add one to my collection for awhile now.

I am at work now, so I cannot check the under side of the butt plate for a while. I will check it when I get back. It sure shoots well!

That's a nice looker. I've only ever run across two Model 99 in 30/30 that were for sale. Both of them were very used and to expensive for the money I could spend on those two days.

Hi guys! Does anyone here have any guess as to the specific model of rifle this is in my original post? Is it a 99f or 99G? I am not that educated in these savages.

Neither. It's not a takedown. That's why I inquired about the serial number, and whether or not the number on the butt matched the receiver. It could be a very early EG.

I have to wait till I get home in two weeks so I can post that info.

Out of curiosity, what distincive characteristics indicate that it is possibly a EG?

nice rifle. I love the 99's. I have not seen this configuration before, but always learning new stuff about the 99's. I have 6, 3 250-3000, 2 300 and 1 38-55, also a bolt in 7mm and a single action in 22lr. On mine I redid the stocks and since they are from the 40 to 50's I put Stith mounts and period Weaver scopes on them except the 38-55 where I put a receiver mounted peep sight. One of the 250's is in a case and I think 1930's or so with a 410 barrel. Fun stuff, thanks for showing your new "baby".

If it's 30's production and has a curved lever, schnabel fore arm but not a takedown, it's an EG. Thing is, it could be an R or a T too with a curved lever, that someone stuck an EG stock set onto. Also, the earliest EG's weren't checkered which throws another fly in the ointment. Best wait to see if the stock number matches the serial number before making anymore half-assed guesses on my part!

Bottom line, what matters most is that it shoots nicely!

I`ve been talking to "Lightfoot" (the fellow that made the custom scope mount for your un- drilled 99) about getting this mount made for my 99. He will make this mount for $160 shipped.Robert
