Lee Double Cavity Mold produces a .312 diameter 185 grain round nose bullet suitable for cartridges like 303B. Handles included.

MilSurpAddict,

Yes, they typically throw COWW at .311". You should really slug and/or chamber cast both of your barrels first, however. Some of these old war dogs have over sized groove diameters, either by manufacture or by wear and tear. You might need a .314" or larger boolit to get .002" over groove diameter.

The Lee products are reasonably priced so you can't go too wrong with a $20 dollar mold.

I hope this helps,

thanks

I have used this in my arisaka but want to load for my Mosin now that surplus is drying up. I want to reload for my k31 but am having a hard time finding a mold or even a sizer for the 306 bullet. Any suggestions

I had that same mold for my MN's and Lee Enfields, and it worked great.
If you are trying to find a sized in .306 in the Lee push thru style, You might have to buy the next size smaller and open it up yourself.
I had to open a .314 to .316 for some of my rifles, and the 8mm .323 to .326 for some of the Mausers.
But isn't the Swiss a .308 bore ?
You should be sizing your boolits to .309.
But if it is truely a .306 bore, then use a.308 sizer that Lee makes.
BTW, I do size that same Lee boolit to .309 for my .308 Win 300 Win mag and 30-06

That's what I use for my 303, argentine, Arisaka. I size it down to .311 for my 30 cals. Where really shines in my Krag and .06.

The points about real-world military bores and throats! are good ones. (Note: After several years, I consider myself a novice caster.)

After beagling and polishing, mine throws a .315 slug that I size to .314.
And it's still smaller than I really require for my particular Arisaka 7.7 and 303. And accuracy is not where I want it to be with cast boolits in those rifles.

The unsized .315 slug still falls through the neck of a fired .303. I have to Neck size to hold it in place and use a filler in hopes of reducing gas cutting. In my last test at the range with unsized .315" boolits, I got 3" groups at 75 yards with the .303 sporter. I think the throat is the problem.

In short, I think I need a bigger boolit.

NOE has a 180fn mold with a reduced diameter nose for the swiss, works great. I size mine at .311 and they shoot just fine.

Just checked my book, my k31 slugs at .308 at the grooves and .298 across the lands. Never heard of a 7.5 swiss not using .308 bullets.

That bullet probably will not be fat enough for a Russian M91/30. In a Finn rifle the barrels are better and more consistent at 0.310. I have a group buy Fattest 30 from a few years ago that casts 0.316 for the 304x314 bore my 91/30 has. The downside of a fatter bullet is will it chamber. You might need to play around with some before you drop the dollars on a mold. If you want to try a few of the 0.316 at as cast, 0.315 or 0.314 send me a PM and I will send you some.

Use a 0.309 or 0.310 bullet for the K31 but be aware that they have very short throats and any bullet nose greater than 0.300 will need deaper seating. The straight pull has little camming power and if you have to slam seat the bullets, you risk damaging the part of the operating rod that engages the bolt. Better to seat deep or get a nose rider like a 311284 or 311299. I have the LEE 309-170F for the 30-30 and it casts with a small nose and fits fine with the check at the base of the neck.

If he has a tight throat on that k31 those bore riders like 311299 will be to big, and NOE's k31 mold is the fix and perfect fit sized at 311. But if it's worn down, the lee 155 shoots well in them, sized at 309.

+1 for the 155gn Lee, My K31 likes this bullet sized to .309.

I use the C312-158-1R for my 91/30. I beagled the mold to throw .315" bullets and size them to 0.3145 on the Lee push through sizer and use a Hornady 30 cal gas check on them for higher velocity shooting. For 10g Unique plinkers, I shoot 'em bare based. Lube is 2:1 Beeswax:Vaseline. Great shooter and so much easier on the shoulder after 20 shots.

That 312 mold is for 308's, i.e. 30 bore's, is it not? I made the mistake of buying a 311 Lee mold in my early days for my 303 Brit. Well, it didn't work too well but now I'm playing with it for paper patch cores.
