We were very forchant this morning when this fellow came in around 730 am. We had turkeys all around us. The gobbling started around 6:15 but everything stayed out of eyesight until this one came charging in with a group of hens and another young tom. Almost ran into our laps got to around 15 yards when Justin took the shot (not with a cast bullet of course). There were two larger toms just out of gun range but with so many birds on top of us he decided to shoot this bird. He and I were very happy. Justin is 13 (nearly 14) and this was his first turkey. We had been scouting and watching the turkeys on our land a lot this year and this year is one of the better years as far as the number of turkeys we are seeing.

Good Luck to all the other young hunters.

Heck of a first bird, congrats! The gobbling was amazing yesterday morning, connected on a nice bird myself with a handloaded shell.

I use 36 gr 4895 with a 1 gr Dacron filler under a 400 gr 457124 for 1391 fps and a measured 22,400 psi in my TD. I suggest that as a starting load with the 350 gr RD cast of 16-1 alloy and work up to 40 gr. That will be under the SAAMI MAP for TDs. A good load should be found in there to satisfy the Colonel.
