View Full Version : Barrel Lining A Marlin 1895?

I have one in .45-70 with the micro-groove rifling. The bore slugs at .4595. I tried some boolits sized to .460 that showed a small improvement, so I figure I'd have to get the equipment to cast and size boolits to at least .461. (I haven't found a source I can just buy.)

To be honest, I'm tired of arguing with an oversized bore and micro-groove rifling. Is it possible to bore out the barrel and reline it? Without taking out a mortgage on my house?

Thank you,
Richard

Sell it and find the same gun with the Ballard rifling. I have the 26" octagon and it is every thing you could ask for in a big bore levergun. Do the math and see what comes up. the cost of the smithing or the trade and some boot to get what you can easily load for without the puny rifling issues. You can always cut it down in length if short is your thing, or just re-barrel your existing gun with any of the readily available tubes, Green Mtn or the like. I believe the re-barrel and the re-line would be close cost wise.

Contact Wayne York. He did a rebore for me on a 336 2 years ago; he does fine work.

Thank you. I checked the site and it looks as though he bores to a larger caliber and then rifles it. I'll ask, though.

I should have thought of this sooner -- call Marlin.

They can rebarrel it and they'll even pay for shipping the rifle to them. All I have to do is box it up and they'll send UPS to pick it up.

I can't get an estimate until they check it. Seems reasonable.

He relines, too.

Post #2 and #5 have correct answers. Either sell it and buy what you want or send it to Marlin and let them rebarrel it.

I wouldn't let Remlin touch my rifle, to many posts about quality control. Right now you have a functioning rifle that has resale value. Try and find a JM stamped ballard rifled 1895 and sell yours to someone who uses jacketed.
