Got It Finished

These are some photos of the 577 I'v been working on, off and on for over a year. I wound up with 20 diff inlays. I wanted to save some of the battle scares so you will see some of them on it. I shot it yesterday for the first time with 70 Gns of Jim S Gold, FFg and a 472-480 Boolit. My shoulder just poped back into place this morning. Ha. It shoots to the left about a foot but that could also be me doing that as it has a horrible trigger pull on it. I simply must do something about that. I made several of the parts on it because Im just to cheap to pay what they want for them and ship them inland. Ha. Hope you enjoy.

cga, it's THE cleanest BP sub I have ever used. I'm not so sure that it's not cleaner then the Trail Boss that IV used. It's right on the line of having me thinking, why bother to experiment with any Kind of smokeless no more than I'm gonna shoot it. Lol. Thanks for posting.

Hello Mike. Thanks so much for the kind words. I admit I got a little carried away with the inlays but it had been a few years since I had done any much that I was just having to good a luck and fun with them.

The Ivory ones I had to bond them to real thin aircraft 1/32" plywood to work them up. the Ivory itself was only about .046 thick and would not stand any sawing, shaping or sanding to get it ready. It was a very narrow margin I had to stay with on the depth of the carved pockets for those.

The Heart wood Gabon Ebony was a no brainer except Ebony does not like any Finnish of any Kind at all. I have found down through the years the best thing to do with Gabon Ebony is work it down to 2000 grit finnishing paper and then polish it on a 8" felt wheel with 600 knife makers rouge.

The Rosewood inlays took about one hour each and the finnish will dry after about a week. ha

The brass spring bucket that has the keeper spring for the long lever was the easest of it all because I was saving about $50 bucks turning and forming it over buying a unblued metal one. The only thing that really made me sqimish was the taking off of and remorming the front band to get rid of the bayonet lug and that was because in my mind I knew I was removing something off of the gun Forever. Lol.

Sorry for the Long post but I didn't say much about all I did when I posted the photos. Ha.

That's about right. The heat works a little of the hot wax into the wood, and that is about as much as you can get.

Here is a firm that offers investment cast barrel bands, mostly under "castings" rather than "Martini parts". I have used them for hammers, and their castings are excellent.

Hello B in S. I will check that out. Yes. IV tried several finishes on that Ebony and it all turns out the same. Polishing the bare wood always turns out and looks the best because the grain does still show up. When a Finnish does dry on the ebony it looks to much like plastic. Lol.
