View Full Version : Has rcbs changed their shellholder #4 to fit something other than .223 cases?

I have an old set of shellholders, probably picked it up in the 90's when I started reloading. My package says #4 fits the 223 case, but no way. Way too big. The one that fits like a glove is my #19. I have checked and double checked. The set confirms #4 is 223, and my shellholder has 4 stamped on it.

Here is a chart from RCBS it doesn’t show the #4 for a 223.

#10 is the RCBS shellholder for .223 and .380.

RCBS #4 is for a magnum case, 300/375 H&H and any of their derivatives. EMC45 is correct. The #10 is the RCBS shellholder for a 223.

Your package/chart is from Lee, not RCBS. Lee is a #4 for .223
Not sure what manufacturer the holders are though... a #19 I do not have.

RCBS #19 is for the 25/30/32/6.8 Remington (.421"), that's just in between the size of the 223 and the 30-06 case head.
Redding #19 is for the 6.5x68 (.512), which is between the 30-06 and belted magnum case head sizes.
Lyman #19 is for the 30 Carbine cartridge,. which has a slightly smaller case head diameter than the 223, .360 vs .373 inches. With a loose clearance for easy insertion I can see that this could fit a 223 cartridge tightly.

It's rediclous that they couldn't have standardized in the beginning. Now we just have to live with it. They could at least all put their logo on them so we could cross reference.

There was a cross reference for shell holders of different manufacturers on one of the forums(may have been here) that was complete except for Redding. I just added another column and manually added Redding #'s.

Sigh.

The Lee number 4 fits .223/5.56.

You have something wrong on your end.

The thing wrong is my brain and eyes. I went back and looked at the case again, and saw Lee in small print. I assumed it was rcbs because the color of the case is green. Thanks. Sorry for my brain fart.
