View Full Version : "Gun Safe" Mount In Truck

I'm posting this here because I don't know where to put it to get the most exposure.

I'm considering putting a Hornady Rapid Safe in my truck. (http://www.hornady.com/store/RAPiD-Safe) I don't like leaving a gun in any of the storage compartments when I have to go to any location that doesn't allow firearms(Please don't start about 2nd Amendment infringes). This particular container looks like it would be somewhat unobtrusive if mounted on the transmission hump.

Now I'm looking for suggestions on the most secure mounting. I have not actually seen the Rapid Safe, only pictures. I'm not real crazy about cable anchors that can be cut w/bolt cutters. I also don't know if bolting it to the hump is an option.

I thought about the transmission hump because there is a flat area on top that should be sufficient to mount the safe. And if needed would be accessible from the driver's seat.

As I said, any suggestions would be appreciated.

I just watched the video. I think I am going to do the same thing. I wish there was some solid metal to bolt to by my trucks steering column. I think mounting it right there and wearing the bracelet would be great.

i dont think it much matters. so long as its secured to keep the lazy crooks from getting it. anyone prepared with tools ie bolt cutter etc is just gonna steal the whole car and they will have plenty of time to get the gun later.

My thoughts are that having something like that mounted in sight is just more reason to break in to the truck, even if they can't break into the box. Something hidden is twice as safe as something locked is an old saying, I would think a gun magnet mounted under the seat/behind dash, hidden would be better. Nothing visible to motivate a break in and not found without serious searching, yet handy.

That is another way of looking at it. It would be cheaper too.

Take a look at these, http://www.consolevault.com/

Unless you are dead set on the Hornady. They are pricey but look pretty good, and no obvious sign you have one from outside the car.

ah, the good ole days...

Ain't that the truth.
I don't even know if you could drive across town without somebody jumping in the bed and trying to break the glass these days.

I like those but although I have a 2013 Tundra, mine doesn't have a console. Just a center seat w/a pulldown "console". I guess I have the "economy' model, which is what I wanted.

The best solution would be to mount something on the transmission hump. The Tundra has a large flat area on the hump. As several have pointed out, the Hornady safe would have to be disguised somehow. It is somewhat garish with the big red "H"

Oops, the "H" on the front right corner (across from the key buttons) is the RFID reader. Don't go wild painting it over if you intend to use the bracelet, card, or key fob.

Four key buttons, 1, 2, 3, 4 you can use a 4, 5, or six digit code. Though I don't see it, I sure hope Hornady has set a 10 second timeout for a wrong code. You can use the cylindrical key without power.

Battery Power Mode
When the RAPiDŽ safe is operating on battery power, you must press the ENTER key to activate system.

Batteries
For backup or mobile use, your safe requires eight AA batteries (not included).
NOTE: The RAPiDŽ safe is not designed to operate on a 9V battery.
NOTE: Replace batteries every 12 months.

How much area do you have behind the seat?

I take it this truck has the "split" seat, with both sides adjustable and a fold up or down center arm rest??

My Chevy work truck is so equipped and I hide my laptop bag behind the seat and set my daily newspaper over it.

Lots of room to mount one of these safe, with controls pointing up, in the same area. a simple reach behind would open the safe and provide a place to put it or use it if needed!.

A coat in cold weather and a newspaper in hot would be simple camoflage! as an added bonus you might be able to mount a steel plate to the outside of the cab, sandwiching the cab between it and the safe making removal by vandals even harder.

Just a thought to feed ideas for you.

My truck is a "crew" cab, so no small space behind the seat.

Concerning camouflaging the Hornady safe, I was referring to the big H with the two prominent cartridges on each leg.

The more I think about it, a big magnet might be the best "holder" for a firearm, except it would probably only work with a semi-auto with it's slab sides. Not really a problem.

That console vault is a pretty cool box though. I drive a 4 door tundra with the center console. 8-)

What about a cheap aftermarket console to go over the rapid-safe?

I solved my security problem in all vehicles for $10 per vehicle.

A piece of chain attached to a seat post and a rubber coated lock run through the chain and trigger guard. It will be there when I get back...not concerned about crooks walking around with bolt cutters...and it is out of sight with no visible holes drilled.

It was nothing to see a gun hanging in the back glass of trucks not all that long ago here. But to many cockroaches that will break your glass to steal it now even if the doors are unlocked. I carried my gun to school so I could hunt afterwards now they are in trouble for having a shotgun hull in the bed of the truck or a paintball gun. We are disarming ourselves without thinking about it to conform to what the few say is right I think. How many of us hide our firearms to keep from offending others just thinking out loud. I carry open just like many carry signs to protest but I do it in a way that is not in their face.
