I have one of the rifles Star sold in the 70s or 80s chambered in .30-30. Does anyone know what the thread size/pitch is for the barrel? Are these the same as the #5 Remingtons?

Contemplating buying a barrel to change it to a bigger caliber, just don't know if it'll fit.

.

IDK the thread size, but well before considering a new barrel, I'd explore reboring/rerifling & re-chambering the existing barrel. (unless you're considering a cartridge smaller than the .30-30)

Looks like it won't work. That's OK, .30-30 is great too.

Why not have the barrel rebored to 35/30?

If I was gonna rebore, it would most likely be to .38-55. A fella has a .444 Marlin barrel for a great price in the S&S forum. If it was easy, I'd probably do it, always was interested in the .444.

I picked up a 44 magnum barrel at a gun show, 18.5" long and not any markings at all ( I suspect it's a Star barrel) it is the same thread as a #1 rolling block has ( I screwed it into a Swedish action ) just had to take a little off the knox to headspace it. makes a nice little plinker with 44 special type loads ( there is a flaw in the barrel about 4" from muzzle , that's why I got it for $15 but it's a fun little gun )

richhodg66,

Numrich ( Gunparts Corp ) has .357 barrels that are pre threaded for the Star rolling block carbine part number 119955. There information lists the shank as .950 dia. and the thread is metric 27 x 2.0. The barrels they have are in the white for $ 38.25
I also have a Star RB carbine in 30-30. I am thinking of getting one of these barrels myself as here in OH we cannot use a 30-30 for deer, rifles must be strait walled and .357 or larger.
I would make it in 357 mag or maximum and it would be a legal deer gun in OH.
Being the Stars frame ,hammer and block are castings instead of forgings I would stay with a lower pressure cartridge in them. They were made in 30-30, .357 mag. and 44 mag as factory chamberings.
If we could use the .357 Herrett I would chamber it in that as the extractor from the 30-30 would work without modification. For the smaller rim size of the .357 mag/max you would need to weld the rim recess up and recut it as that part isn't available thru Numrich.
Good Luck !
