Let's not forget the 30 Gov't, the 30-40 Krag.

.30-30 has to be first choice for the readily available brass and rifles. .30-40 is also a superior cartridge for cast due to its long neck and modest powder capacity. It has significantly more energy potential than the .30-30 but brass is not as available as .30-30 nor are the guns chambered for it. >303 British, 7.62x54 and some of the rimmed 8mm could also serve but brass availability is a problem or you have to deal with a rather short neck which limits your bullet length.

The 30-30 was made for cast boolits.

and if you do go for the 30-30 you would do good to get the 311041 boolit mold or a noe copy http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=30&products_id=299&osCsid=4niaphm2blnmb6e0pqjha7k591

It depends so much on what kind of shooting you want to do, and what kind of action you want to use. But of those mentioned, the .30-40 would be my first choice, for its relatively long neck. It is a good idea, if possible, to avoid lube grooves exposed at front or rear. The former only matters if you carry the rounds in a way that permits dirt getting into the lube. But the second would expose the lube in the powder space, which despite the absence of hard data, strikes me as probably being worse.

That 1-10 twist is a real hamstringer for cast. 12 or even 14 would be far more versatile.
If it were me, I'd find a barrel you don't care for and stub it out for a 30-30 in 14 twist.

30-30, 303, 30-40 and 45-70. They all love cast

And no one mentions the 7.62x54R in a Mosin?

Sigh.

I use slower powder and or reduced loads. Or 10-13 gr of Red Dot. Bring the speed down from over 2k to mid 14-1500 fps.
Lee .312 185 works in both Mosin and 7.62x39 SKS or AK.

The real key I've found thus far is fitting your bullet to your rifle.
Read the sticky on "slugging" and how to pound cast your rifles chamber/throat. Size accordingly.

30 cal 30-30. Easy to source components and info. Its long neck is great for cast.

Another to add to the list especially for handguns is 32 H&R or 327 Magnum.

30/30, .30 Herret, 30/30 Wesson, 30/40, .303Br.(in that order), my pick would be the 30/30 Wesson, brass made from .357 Max. I believe!

Rifle cartridges:
30 '06 Rimmed, if you can find the brass.
As mentioned earlier, 307 Win (Rimmed 308 Win. if you can find the brass.)
If you consider a belted magnum case rimmed, then you can include:
300 Win Mag,
308 Norma Mag,
300 Weatherby Mag, etc.

Pistol cartridges:
32-20 WCF.
The 32 ACP has a partial rim. Probably not what you have in mind.
