I came across a 4" Model 10-7 that was marked RHKP (Hong Kong Police) and it had the factory lanyard ring on the butt. The bluing was worn in the typical locations consistent with holster wear (near the muzzle on the sides of the barrel, cylinder edges, etc.) but no rust. The action was in excellent condition with perfect timing and the bore was fine.
The asking price was $300 which I thought was a little high for a late 1970's or early 80's model 10. I'm having second thoughts. I have more than my share of police trade in revolvers and they are some of my favorite wheelguns but I think I could find room for just one more........

I'd buy it. Mod's are the best working .38's!

I'm halfway hoping someone will buy it and remove the decision from my hands.

Not a bad number these days, in that condition. Everything I see is that plus a $100 or more.

A couple of years ago - I'd have said it was on the high side - not now. The 10 dashes I'm seeing are around $350 plus at times - and usually some honest wear to them. If the one you are looking at is tight and in good shape with the exception of the holster wear - I would have no problem paying that for it. Chances are, it hasn't been fired that much.

A couple years ago, I passed on a pristine 4" 10-5 that a shop wanted $350.00 for. I passed but now wished I had spent the extra and picked it up. Let's face it - if you are looking for a good shooter - the $300 to $350 is much better than paying the $700 plus for the current Smith 10 (classic) which has a lock on it to boot. Over time - what little you thought you "overpaid" for it is a cheap price to pay for the enjoyment you'll get out of it when shooting. In the end . . they aren't going down in price.

Be good to yourself . . . if you want it and have the $$, buy it and enjoy it.

I'd hesitate too, but I'm cheap, and know how much less they sold for just a few years back. I bought a worn finish 1940's 4" and 6" a week apart for $160 each off GB. Both mechanically perfect. I have bluing tanks, so both look nice now too :) Prices have climbed dramatically, so $300 might not be too far off. Offer $250 and see where you get.

buds is selling police trade in M10s for 319 + what it costs you to get it from your dealer , if you got to see and handle this one 300 seems fair

I need another K-Frame like a hole in my head, so naturally it came home with me.
It's not that old but it is a neat little piece of history and functional as well.

I am in the same predicament with a 19-3 4" for $325 and just bought a mod 67-3 to go with my 66. It was hard for me to leave the 19-3 in the case and eats at me everyday.

I just went through that model 10 and put it back together. I'm not going to say it was in un-fired condition but it has been shot very few times. It has a turn line on the cylinder (not something I care about at all) but the recoil plate is almost untouched. The top strap and forcing cone show no wear. The timing and lock up is spot on. It really appears to have been carried a lot and shot a little.

Now I need to find a black Tyler T-grip for a square butt K-frame !

Gheeze have you ever priced used guns in Kansas? The price is normally within 15% of new prices. If it says Ruger, S&W, or Colt around here the prices start around 500 for used. If I found a S&W anything around here for 300 out the door, I'd have to change my shorts.

Y'all are killin' me. I guess I will stop in and see if it is still there. I have avoided it for a couple weeks so hoping it is gone cause I really don't need another.

For $300, I'd be buying. Best I have found around here is $400. I'll be buying as soon as I find one just under that. I "need" a 4" 38spl for my next range gun

I would say that is market value. Last summer I came across some. Rough ones they wanted 290 otd and 360 otd for the ones with just holster wear. Model 64's with just holster wear were 400 otd.

Ouch! If that firearm is still in the case you should go back and get it. If its in decent shape thats a good price especialy if it has the box. You could always sell it at a profit but if you shoot it I doubt youll want to let it go

If I saw one in a case at that price i would not be able to get my plastic out fast enough

No box and in decent shape. I will drop by today and since it was so hard to pass up I have a feeling it will come home. It was marked for $485 so may still be there.

Congrats to the model 10 Petrol.

Just shot it, great gun. The grips are too small for my hands but a Tyler grip adaptor or some other grips will fix that.

Good buy. Agree on the original grips! Sorry so late to the party.

I agree with the others, $300 for a good K frame is never a bad deal. HK police markings
add a bit of history, may someday be a noticeable increase in value due to
those marks.

I really like Herrets Shooting Stars on my K-frames. Ebay will often net you a pair pretty cheap. I put 35,000 rounds through my first 10-5 in just about a years time. Great guns.

With the lanyard ring on the butt I cannot install grips that enclose the bottom of the grip frame. I could remove the lanyard ring but I don't want to (adds to the cool factor of the gun). I think my best bet is a Tyler Grip adaptor. That would be cheap & keep the gun close to original. I had an old T-grip for a round butt and put it on just to try. It wasn't quite right but it was close enough to get an idea of how it would feel. That is the solution and now I just need to find a glossy black #3 Tyler T-grip for a square butt K-frame.
Another solution would be something like Eagle Secret Service grips for a Sq. Butt K-frame but that is almost $100 worth of grip on a $300 gun

I wouldn't worry about the cost of the grip. They will fit on any K frame Smith, if you happen to send that one down the road.

i picked up a 10-11 (I think) round butt heavy barrel from Bud's awhile back for $235.00, and look what they are selling for now. I think it would be hard to lose money on that purchase.

.

The Model 10 in question (Royal Hong Kong Police issue) has a lanyard loop attached to the bottom of the grip frame so that precludes the installation of any grip that covers the bottom of the grip frame. I could remove the lanyard loop but that would distract from the character of the gun. T-grip adaptor seems like the best solution. It improves the grip, allows the original grip panels to be used and doesn't alter the gun.

The history of the RHKP and men like William Fairnbairn and Eric Sykes makes the revolver very interesting. I remember they loaded their own ammo with bullet base marked for identification.

Won't be long until these police trade in 38's are all cycled through the retail system. Then they'll go the way of those $45 model 1903 Springfield's so common in my youth.

I gave both my daughters M15's a few years ago. They love them since they shoot with such fine accuracy.

I originally felt that $300 was too high for a used, 30+ year old K-frame even with unique markings and history. Mechanically it was in outstanding condition and I relented. Now I'm glad that I acquired it.

I thought Fairbairn was with the Shanghai police.
That is right! The Shanghai Police borrowed a detachment of 31 Europeans from the Hong Kong police but I think that was before Fairbairn. Fairnbairn had a long and great career as an instructor.

UPDATE, Got a shiny black Tyler T-grip for the RHKP model 10.
The gun fits my hand now and it can be returned to stock by loosening the grip screw and removing the grip adaptor.
That's the ticket !
