Have been wanting a 44Mag, preferably in a Marlin, but I also have been watching the Rossi & put in a lowball bid on a NIB & got it for $396. That's like $50+ under dealer.

Of course after I get thru "fixing" it, it'll be some more!

What is the twist on them, I looked at Rossi site & couldn't find it. I think I saw 1/30 on here. Is that correct?

Would like to use 260-300 cast if possible. Will that twist work?
Thanks
Tom

"Of course after I get thru "fixing" it, it'll be some more!"

They are worth some investment. Great score. The Rossi 92s are under appreciated. I had a preeminent SASS gunsmith tune mine and it was $$$ well spent.

Yep it took some doing (& money) but my .454 will cycle up to 335gr, cast & jacket, plus plug the safety hole, double ghost ring rear & big green front. Shoots really nice. Would like a big loop lever on it like my Mar 1895.

Yes, 1/30" twist. All Rossi 92s are 1/30" except .30-30 1/12" Here is a good link

Great little rifles, heck of a good price. Love mine for hogs and close range deer.

Great price on a neat rifle...I actually prefer the Rossi over the Marlin.

But I can scope up the Marlin easy. The irons don't work to well on my old eyes.

I own the stainless-steel version of the M92 in .44 mag..it's a sweet shooting little carbine. My first Rossi and the smoothest working/feeding of 4 M92 style rifles I own now.

I don't know if I would load one of these too hot and heavy simply because of the reputation for these shooting the mag-tube loose.

My Rossi .44 has scope-mount holes under the rear sight..and Rossi offers a mount that'll bolt right on for a scout style set-up

Didn't I read that there was a fix for the tube problem?

Still hoping to hear on how heavy a bullet will stabilize with the 1-30 twist.

I will probably try to stay with pistol weights that I shoot, up to 250 but have molds at 265 & 310 so if it will shoot them it would be fun to see a comparison between .44 & .454 on killing deer with like bullet wts.

I'm sure deer won't feel any difference but I do have a bear that hangs around, so....

I have the ranch dog 265 and a 24" rossi .44 mag and it shoots then very accurately.

All I know about the mag-tube deal is that it appears to be an affliction that plagued the .44 mags loaded hot and heavy..and the .454 Casules(sp.)....Rossi coming out with screwed into the action mag-tubes for the .454 that can be loaded from the front(like a .22 tube-feeder). Don't know if they offer .44 mag versions in that configuration?

It's just an issue to look for. I use 240gr factory equivalent .44 mag ammo in my Rossi carbine. No problems with the mag-tube...mine is all nice and tightly fitted. I can grasp the physics behind the tube phenomenon though...big heavy bullets loaded hot and heavy..kick hard...and with a tube loaded with ten or so cartridges the weight under recoil may be too much for the mag-cap screw to retain..The Rossi's not so much known for superb workmanship and fitting...the tube full of ammo could dis-combooberate itself!

I would thing a nice tight fit and a good-tough screw would contain anything a .44 mag could generate...but maybe no?

I have one of the Rossi M92 in 44 mag with the 16 inch barrel. What a handy little gun to brush hunt deer with. Currently using 240gr XTP in it but I really like 265gr cast bullet in it for plinking.

I will ensure that the 265s are ready to go when it arrives. Have many boxes of 245 down already loaded for revolvers.

Also, is there a feeding problem with the longer bullets, like with the .454? My GS had a serious PIA getting it to feed everything.

Ragnarok, Where & how are they staking the tube with a screw?

Since I'm one of those idiots who starts hot & works up lol (safely(usually)), I probably need a preemptive fix.

Ranchdog runs this site. Lots of good info on these guns.

I took a 6pt buck this past season with the Rossi M92 chambered in .454Casull, but I hit him with a VERY hot (for a Colt load) 300gr JHP.
These were special loads worked up for me by a friend.
Don't know what powder they used but said it crony'd right at 1000fps.
I hit within 1" of my aim point, but then again my shot was only about 35 yards.

Ranchdog answered me & said he shoots up to 300s with his with no problems.

I was also reading about mag tube creep fixes.

I've said this before about the Rossi!- I'd just assume pay more & have one that works out of the box with all these problems resolved.

I have had several Rossi's. All have worked for me out of the box. Maybe some do not. I would never hesitate to buy another, at least until I encounter a problem.... They are not as slick or pretty as say a browning 92, but they are cheaper and I shoot them good. I would like to replace the stainless rossi 357 model 92 that I traded for a ruger old model 45 colt some time back. I have a 44-40 now and have had a 44 mag and have had a 45 colt. Some have been from the 1990's and some the 2000's. There is someone I know who has a 357 trapper that I would like to trade for. :)

I'm harboring a growing hankerin' for a Rossi '92 in .45 Colt. Want one with the long octagon barrel, 24" or 26"? Haven't went looking, kinda too broke at the moment. Don't know of anyplace in the south Denver area that even carries them yet. God help me if I get one in my hands, I'm afraid I'll whip out my Cabela's Visa.....

One like this. <lust, drool>

Congrats on the score, when is it scheduled to arrive? Only new Rossi's I see around here are those silly mare's leg "pistols". Waste of a good 92 action, IMHO.

Went & picked it up today. Everything looks good. Fit, finish, wood though plain is good. Did some cleaning & pulled out the sights to put on but didn't get to it. Will do it tomorrow & shoot & function test & check bore size.

Not bad for $396 - if it shoots OK.

Even after putting ghost rings & green insert on the Rossi .454 I still can't see good enough to shoot well.

Have any of you put optics on the Rossi?

Any input on what & how good it works would be appreciated.
