I am looking at buying an AR 15 and AR 10, I have 55 gr bullets mostly for the 5.56 and 150 ish for the AR 10. I would like your guidance as to brand of rifle and barrel twist to get good accuracy with the bullets I have. As always I appreciate your advice and help.

Hey USMC87. don't know much about the AR 15's or 10's, but Cdnn and Bud have great prices. Buds is free shipping and cdnnsports charges $14 for shipping so you just need to find an FFL to xfer it too. Good Luck.

In those weights the most common twists will do. I would look into 1:7 for the 223 so you can load those really long and heavy cast boolits. 1:10 for the 308 for 180gr and up. AR10 the dpms is decent and won't break the bank at around 8-900.

If 55 grn is the only bullet you want to shoot I would look fo 1-12 or 1-10 for the 223 1-8 or 1-7 will do 770-80 grns very nicely but can be wanting with shorter lighter bullets. its also dependenandt on the chamber cut 223, 5.56, wulde or some others all have slight changes in the throats and leades. For the 308 and 150 grn bullets the high power shooters used 1-12 and some 1-10 ( if 168s were going to be used or long range of 8 9 1000 yds were to be fired) Another choice is 4 or 6 groove barrels in the 308 some feel the 4 grooves give longer life. another thing to look for is if the barrel has been stress relieved.

The ar 15's I've been looking at are 1-9 twist, Do you think that would stabilize the 55 gr bullets? I would probably shoot some different weight bullets also but 55's are the bulk of it.

That will do

1-9 is what you want if you're only going to shoot 55 grain bullets. You're limiting yourself w/ that twist since it won't stabilize the likes of a 69 grain SMK.

Be aware that there is no standard AR10. If you plan on building or upgrading you will be limited. It's gotten better but w/ no standard it can get confusing.

My personal experience has lead me to the conclusion that 1/8 twist with 223/5.56 is most accurate with 55-75grn weights. Everybody has different plans for their AR, 1:9 and 1:7 still are perfectly acceptable. My most recent 1/8 18" odinworks barrels shoots .6" 10shot groups with Speer flat-based 55grn HP varmint bullets. 1/10 seems to be the norm for the AR308 platform and should handle most .30 caliber bullets.

One thing that was not mentioned in the OP is budget. The most common twist for AR-15 barrels is 1x9... If you want a AR on a budget, this is most likely what you will find, as it's a good compromise twist rate for a bunch of bullet sizes... We all shoot mostly 55 grain bullets, with some 62-75's thrown in from time to time. Personally, I'm not gonna switch (or build) a new upper just for a heavier bullet. I have a 1x12 Match bbl for 52 grain bullets, but I never use it...

I don't know AR-10's specifically, but my other .308 and 30-06 rifles are all 1x10... I think that's a common, general purpose twist for those bullets as well....
