I have been thinking about the 400 Corbon barrel for one of my 1911s. The question that I have what are the pro and cons on this caliber. I will be loading lead in it. Thanks

Short neck and boolit selection due to the neck would be a possible issue.

And I thinking about also. And should I build a full size or a mid size I have both type slides in my parts bin. I was going run the bullets in the middle around 145-175 gr.

I would go with the longer slide to take advantage of the intended purpose, velocity.

I've got one in a 5" slide that works well, but I only shoot jacketed and plated bullets through it. The main reason for that is I've got lots of the Berry's 165 gr. plated bullets and they work well through the .400 Cor-Bon. I tried the suggested loads for the Nosler 135 gr. JHP bullets, but the primers flowed like water, no matter which primer I used, and I didn't care for the accuracy of the lighter bullets. I've found that 150 gr. to 165 grain bullets work best in this caliber.

I also found that Winchester and Federal brass worked better for necking down. I had better luck with once fired brass for some reason, but I have necked down new Winchester brass. Just make sure that whatever brass you decide to use is perfectly round at the neck or they will wrinkle when necked down.

Hope this helps.

Fred

PS: The small pistol primed .45 acp brass is perfect for .400 Cor-Bon use. In fact, that's all Starline offers in their .400 Cor-Bon Brass.

I've had fair results with cast bullets in my full size 1911. Forming brass is OK, but much easier to buy .400 brass to start with. Barrel and recoil spring change, and you are in business. Matter of fact, just bought a commander length barrel, haven't fitted it yet. Nice to have convertible guns. BTW, I prefer the word "gun", NOT "platform"

I love my 400CB barrel and convert my small primer 45's to keep them out of the LP pile permanently. :bigsmyl2:

When I want to shoot faster velocity I convert 45 Super for hunting loads. You can then go beyond 400cb load data as the brass is even stronger than 400CB. You need to watch for bullet setback though due to the short neck.

I use a 45 ACP carbide die to size the case first, then the 400 Cor-bon, don't have to lube that way. I load the 180 gr. RN
FP made for the 45 Colt as it has a crimp groove, I use a heavy roll crimp.

rond,

How are you getting that .452" diameter bullet in the .400" diameter neck of the .400 Cor-Bon? I'm sure you meant another bullet........

Anybody converted a Glock to 400 corbon? I was reading on a site selling barrels theres issues w feeding in double stack mags, something about nose dive being a bottle neck. They recommended the 10rd mags.

This is the sort of thing that interests me, converting guns, have a 1911 running 7.62x25 now. Might consider digging up a G21 to run 400 corbon in it, or a conversion for my older 1911 in 45, newer one has a 40cal breach face, so no go on this caliber.

I got a .400 corbon barrel cheap for my 1911 when somebody closed them out a few years back. I got it as a novelty, but I've really enjoyed it.

I'm using small pistol .45 cases that I picked up for free. I had to swage a crimp out of some of them. I also prefer to use a carbide .45acp die first, then put them through the cor-bon dies.

I've run lead boolits almost exclusively in mine. The Lee .40 mold I had for my 10mm do OK, but a friend has a custom mold from Accurate that makes great boolits for the caliber.

I've found it to be accurate and light recoiling.

I meant to say .38-40 bullet, getting old I guess.

I have a 6" barrel for my PT-1911, functions flawlessly. I use reformed 45acp cases with starting loads only as factory 400 brass is made from +P brass according to Starline. I do have some factory brass as well. The downside as has been mentioned the short neck. It keeps up with 10mm up to about 180gr boolits.
