Well if were not snowed in AGAIN!!!!!I gotta go tuesday and grab my 1902 m94 half oct half round button mag'd, factory lyman tanged M94 in 38/55. It's supposedly got a sweet bore. Well I'll be the judge of that. Anyhoo I know that diameters differ but there must be a mold that overall performs well. I'd like to just grab without waiting on custom so as to get some cast up for the girl. I prefer GC, and hot runners. Any preferances among you 38 owners?

Charger 1, I've got a 1924 version that slugs at .380. I bought into a Lee group buy a couple of years ago that has shot good. But I'm getting ready to buy the RCBS .376 250FN. I'm gonna try paper patching with these boolits as cast. I'll also beagle the mould to get them hopefully right at groove diameter. I'm looking forward to playing with this mould.

I just finished testing some hunting loads for my 38-55 rifle. I am kind of a B/P nut and have been trying to get a good hunting load in B/P. I just finished testing my best load so far. I am using Schutzen FFFg and a 260 gr. gas check bullet that Mountan Moulds made just for the throat in a lever action. The bullet when seated to the bottom of the front band just touches the rifling of my Marlin. The bullet chambers and ejects well from the Marlin and in pushing 1400 fps velocity from the 26" tube on the Marlin. The g/c and the soft lube (bees wax and bear oil) let me shoot 12 or more without cleaning although i can't see that i will ever need more than ONE. It has been too cold to bench rest the rifle but out of my jury rig car window bench rest i am shooting under 3" with buckhorn irons. Cast from soft alloy of 1-30 lead to tin the bullet expands well and puts a nice hole in the far side of a deer. With IMR 3031 i can push the same bullet to 1800 fps with no leading and about the same accuracy. I will be mounting a good peep and doing some solid bench work as soon as it warms up. (if ever)

I use a lyman 248 gr lead flat point in my very similar 94 Win (made in 1913). It casts at 379 and I run it through a 279 sizer more to lube it that anything else. That bullet over 18 gr of AA 5744 will print into around 4 inches at 200 yards.

Have been using 2 versions of a 255 grain boolit in 3 guns; a Win Hi-Wall and 2 Win 94's- a SRC and a reg rifle. One mold is an old WRA single cav wooden handled antique and the lube grooves are kind of shallow-almost looks like a Lee tumble job, probably made for BP. They can be found regularly on E-Pay. The other mold is a Lyman 375248. Both cast for me at .379 with WW and I've been shooting them as cast. I've beeen loading 27 grains of 3031 in the SRC and 30 grains in the rifles behind either boolit and I get decent grouping, 3"-4" at 100 yards. There are lots of other choices in powders and loadings that can work as well or better I'm sure, and with some tinkering with various combinations could/would produce better groups and maybe some ok groups out at 200 yards- a project for the coming summer and fall. I try to keep the pressures and the fps at 1500 or less so as to not batter the guns and me...we're all oldtimers. LLS

I have a Lyman mold #375499AW. this mold is designed for .375 WIN. It casts bullets weigh about 282grs using Lyman #2 alloy. it is a gas check bullet. I use it in my old 94 Winchester 38-55 with 18 or 20 grs of 4227. it will shoot about 1 1/2" at 100yds using a receiver sight. this is a light load. I only use light loads in this old rifle because it has a bit of a head space problem. I also use this bullet in my Uberti Hi-Wall 38-55, with a large amount of either 4895 or Reloder 7. these loads work well 100 or 200yds. they are sized at .379 for both rifles. they size good at .379 and can be sized to .377 although they are more the right size to be sized .379. .377 or .379 work well in the Uberti but the old 94 needs them sized .379.

I had a custom mould made by Veral Smith of LBT. I'm still awaiting my sizer for .380, so unfortunately, can't tell you how this bullet does.

I think they refer to it as "379-250-RF". I have heard others refer to them as throwing at .379-.381. The one I have throws .379+ and I have been able to successfully beagle it out to around .3815.

A Winchester Legacy in 38-55 works very well with a cast 255 grain sized at .376 over 7 grains of Trail Boss. It is a pleasant load to shoot.

Speaking of leaver guns, I just got an Uberti repro model '76 in 50-95. What is a good load for it? I am using RMC brass. Any help is appreciated.

I've got a bunch of 38-55's and all shoot very well with the common RCBS 250gr bullet EXCEPT the 1917 1894 carbine with it's .379" bore. I contacted RCBS and they stock the same bullet mould, but in an enlarged version that will cast at .379" - .380". Give them a call or Email them, they have the larger version in stock. The tip about the larger RCBS came from Mike Venturino in an article done in the last year.
Other than that LBT will build a nice mould from an upset slug. My 250gr LFN shoots great. It casts at .380 and sized to .379. (It wont chamber a .380 diameter bullet without opening up the neck).
