Several years ago, for lack of something better that was readily available, I bought a Lyman Revolution Gun Vise. It's OK, but what I really need is a vise that will hold a rifle, barrel down and muzzle lower than chamber so that bore cleaner never travels or drips into action or onto wood.

Don't have one..but this one looks to be top of the line...Brownells Lothar Walther...Bisley gun cleaning vise. Perhaps someone who is more computer savy can post pics.

The Tipton best gun vice works great for cleaning them. If you're just mounting optics and not really banging on the rifle it works for that as well. But if the rifle needs to be held steady you want a real vice. I'm still looking for a large older one on the cheap. I refuse to pay what they want for the current crop of subpar vices.

Buy a good quality vice at a garage sale and make a set of padded jaws for it. Way cheaper than that $275.00 Brownwlls gun vice. I made my padded jaws from strips of leather from a old belt, brass tacked to a piece of wood that has notches cut in it to slide down over the screw in the vice. I soaked the belt in water prior to cutting the strips and then formed it around a piece of old rifle barrel stock. Let it dry and oiled it up. It now has a permanent curl to accept the gun barrel. It works well for everything the Tipton gun cleaning vise won't do.

I bought a Chinese knock-off of a parrot vise at Grizzly several years ago. It swivels to any angle and is easily switched between vertical and horizontal jaw orientation.

With wooden or softer jaw inserts it will hold any rifle I want without damage.

Here's a link: http://www.grizzly.com/products/Parrot-Vise/D3125

They aren't as well made as the real parrot vises, but in my non-industrial use it works okay.

I use 2 standard 12" wood clamps! Put leather or foam on the jaws and clamp the barrel with one and the stock with the other.

I have 3 dozen of those clamps and was a quick grab for me.

This vise has been great, and for $20 after 20% coupon, even better.
Has many of the same features, plus more, as the Brownell vice has.
For light duty work, it does the job.

I think this photo is actually larger than vise is in real life.

Hi. I like a good vise, seen a neat one the other day was Parker Hale made and was similar to the Brownells vice but was made to fit to a tent pole. For my rifle work i have a small desktop version of the Black and Decker wood/project vise/clamp chumdly, the one with two cranks. I padded the jaws with rags good ole duct tape. Works good and can be adjusted to fit tapered stocks. Was all of ten dollars.
