View Full Version : .32 caliber bullets in a Marlin 336?

Background Info:

I have a 1980 Marlin 336 (No Microgroove) that I am trying to work up a small game load for. I'd like to mimick the original .30-6-100 .30-30 load or a .32-20 load.

Questions:

1) I didn't have much luck finding a 100-115 grain cast .30 caliber bullet with a crimp groove. I did, however, find a good deal on some .32 (.312) caliber 100 grain SWC cast bullets w/ crimp groove. Do I need to size the .312 down to a .311 or .310?

2) Does anyone have any experience using IMR's Trailboss over a lighter bullet in .30-30? (I'd like to run 1100-1300 fps)

Thanks for any help

Leave them .312. As long as they'll chamber freely, the barrel can take care of the rest. I have no experience with Trail Boss, but 5 grains of ANY of the fast pistol powders is a reasonable place to start.

Redrooster,

What caliber is your rifle? A .312 boolit is normally considered to be a .30 cal... If your rifle is a .32 caliber, such as 32 Special, you won't be happy with the results from shooting .30 cal boolits in it. You will probably experience terrible accuracy and a lot of leading.

Sorry...It is a .30-30.

Thanks for the replies.

Red Rooster,
Welcome to the forum. Regarding bullet diameter, as Leftoverdj suggested, you could try leaving them @ .312 unless they won't chamber.

To date, I have used Trail Boss in the .30-30 with a 125 gr. cast bullet. Standard pistol primers (WLP) gave slightly better accuracy than rifle primers.
5.5 grs. of TB = 1,105 f.p.s.
6.0 grs. of TB = 1,153 f.p.s.
With a 100 gr bullet you could probably add another 100 f.p.s. or so to the above figures.

You're going to like TB in the .30-6-100.

The Lee soupcan should work.

The Lee soupcan should work.

Lee soupcan takes a GC which adds about 3 cents a shot and the aggravation of putting the GC on. It's an excellent choice when a higher velocity is needed, but when you only want 1100 fps or so, plain base is the way to go.

w30wcf,

Thanks for the welcome and the information... If 6 grains will get me approx. 1200-1250 fps, that would be great.

You might want to try 311008.It is very accurate in everything I have tried it in.This includes the 30-30 32-20 and 30 carbine.

In the 30-30 I have not used TrailBoss but Bullseye and Red Dot work very well at 32-20 vel...............Terry
