It will with a soft alloy.

I can get a hollow point .38 to expand with soft alloy, not so much with .45 Colt at saami pressure. I'd give it a try,, but I don't any better.

At 1000 fps, yes they will.
I have a S&W M&P in 32-20. I have an MP 32 ACP HP mold that casts about 77 grains with a soft alloy--30-1. 5.0 grains of Unique or 4.8 grains of WW-231 will push one of those little boolits fast enough to expand. I also have an MP 314-640 100 grain mold that is excellently accurate in my 32 S&W Long and 327 Mag loads, but I have not tried it yet in my 32-20. I should be able to push it fast enough to get reliable expansion. Lyman shows a number of loads that crowd 1000 fps for a 100 grain SWC, so I believe I can safely do so.

Don't forget the old FBI trick of filling the HP cavity with wax or some other softish substance.. HP's expand off hydraulic pressure, and the wax trick works wonders.

That is does. It can turn marginal performance into reliable performance.
