I think I finally found the best solution for wife Linda and me. Linda is a commercial P&C underwriter; I'm a resort worker. We've been in Pennsylvania for about 19 months now (the last 25 years were in CA) and PA isn't working for either one of us. Sad because my relatives moved to Tioga County in 1888, but, as much as I'm delighted with PA and PA's 2d stance, I can't deal with the business environment- be it services or business climate.

So, we're moving to Arizona- Scottsdale. Linda just accepted a position there. The cool thing is that AZ is about as 2d friendly as it gets. AZ has a conservative government on issues such as 2d and immigration....that's important to me. When we were living in CA we made AZ our vacation spot every year- in either July or August when prices are cheapest. The heat was what we were looking for as coastal CA is cold in July and August. We know about the weather in the desert and welcome it- especially after the last two East Coast winters!

In short, we need to know the best- friendliest- shooting ranges in the Scottsdale/Mesa/Phoenix. The next step is to use this information for buying our house there. I don't care if work is 45 minutes away...I really want a range with a great bunch of people within 20 minutes of my house. That's priority!

Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome to Arizona! The only range in the Phoenix area that I am really familiar with is Ben Avery. They have just about every type of shooting venues that you can think of. I usually went down for silhouette shooting. I'm sure more will chime in about other ranges down there. I am in Flagstaff, and we finally got a range here a couple of years back.

Even though I lived in Phoenix from 1990-2005 I never used a range, why should I when all it took was a 30min drive and I had the entire outside to myself. I moved to the White Mountain area after 2005 and it's either go out the front door or the back door for range time.

Artful should read this, which I'm sure he will. He's pretty good with info for the Phoenix area....

Welcome to AZ. I'm in Flagstaff as well, but will be down in PHX for the next several months for grad school. Scottsdale has the Gun Club, and Ben Avery is just off the 101.

If you are in Scottsdale, you can hop on that and head west to BA.

We also have tons of public land with de facto shooting ranges.

In Scottsdale the closest range is Rio Salado. Nice bunch of folks there. Ben Avery is north of the city, nice facility, but farther for you.

I am about the same here, but need to walk just a little farther for my bullet stop, otherwise if I want, just open the door and shoot if I feel like to also.Or just open the window and go at it.

Welcome to Free Arizona. Plenty of good advise already given. Finding the gun range that fits you won't be a problem. You can openly talk about firearms in this State and pursue your passion without being persecuted.

Well, I don't know
- you see a lot of Kalifornia Transplants at the starbuck that don't like open carry.

I you look at Lower Anthem, it makes for a decent commute into Scottsdale, puts you at Ben Avery and 20 mins north is Flat Top Mesa where it is open shooting. Just beware, FTM can be full of wanna be gangers at times as I have been warned.

I usually just hit Avery. $7 all day and you can prepay for 10 and get the 11th free. Open Wed-Sunday.

I have to go a mile and a quarter to BLM and then I can shoot as far as want. A nice range (Sara Park) is only about 5 miles away. I love it here.

The one thing to think about is Driving to and from work - traffic and sun light are a consideration to me - don't want to drive with all the other drone bee's especially into the sun either in the morning or going home. The other issue with some places is limited access to get out (gated communities, one road in/out, sporting/entertainment events, etc)

^ excellent points! My wife really wanted Gilbert's or Scottsdale area. When I'm down at doc appt's in Valley and the little bit I have to deal with crazy traffic, I don't regret putting my foot down, that I was done with city life. But we get hammerd on weekends in Summer. We time are trips down and up to be the opposite of vacationers/weekenders. Def worth really getting to know an area before ya buy.
