222 and 223 Contenders

I have a 10" barrel 222 and a 21" barrel 223 and both absolutely love a Bullseye load of about 4.5 gr. but I hate using a load that small. Too easy to make a mistake so I take lots of time per round. I have tried many other powders using more volume but keep having to go back to Bullseye. I know the saying "if it ain't broke, …". Not really frustrated, just whining a little.

All I can say is have a good methodology in your loading that you follow religiously and you will be good to go.

don't know if this would work in your Thompson, but my go to load is a rcbs or saco 55 gr gc, powder coated, over 18.5 grains aa2230. shoot this in my ar carbine for orange sized groups at 200 meters. cycles perfectly and doesn't lead at all (use #2 alloy, air cooled).

To be safe I use a homemade dipper and do each cartridge individually and move it to the other side of the tray one-at-a-time. Just takes time and patience but fortunately I am using them in Contenders so I don't have to do too many at one time. I haven't chronographed the 222 in the 10" barrel but that load in the 223 21" barrel has an MV of 1700 fps.

Anybody here old enough to remember when Herters sold Red and White loading trays. White for primed cases on one side, Red for charged cases on the other. Check the red tray for powder level in each case with a flashlight, then seat your bullets. I'm still using them.

What are these loads used for? I traded my 21" barrel for a 14" and shoot grounding with cast and jacketed loads. I use many loads for this but a good manual really helps. I've used ACWW to linnotype for this caliber.
