The local LEO agency practices on the range I use. Their ammo is provided by agency and these people believe that the signs announcing the requirement to police the brass does not apply to them at all. Ergo when they are done the range is covered with brass. Some .45 ACP and 357 Sig but the remainder is 40 S&W and 9 mm. I take as much as I can haul off. I use the best of the .45's and 9's and the remainder go to the scrapyard. Sometimes I take the money and sometimes they have some lead I hanker for....

I have been finding an ample amount for my swaging needs laying on the ground of the club I belong to. If I were reloading I would probably buy factory ammo when I needed brass so I would know exactly what I have. Or as stated previously, buy new.

You could also shoot some USPSA matches, they always a good source for pickup brass. Just keep away from 9mm's.
