Hello all,

I got a bunch of the 38 wadcutters Hollow base boolits, and almost ran out of them, can you help me find how they are manufactured, the shoot great.

Swaged soft lead, powder type lube.

They can be cast also. NOE offers a mold. I have one, and once you get the hang of it, they cast great. I use a fairly soft alloy.

I have the mold that JonB mentioned above. Unless you have a good amount of casting experience, I'd recommend getting the two-cavity mold. The four-cavity has twice as many pins to manage and, until you get the hang of it, they can be aggravating. Steel pins in aluminum blocks creates a challenge. Keeping the pins hot, well polished and very lightly coated with lube helps. Also, I run the melt about 25 degrees hotter than "normal". Just a few thoughts. I hope this is helpful.

I've found the Speers to be VERY accurate.

What will the swaged proces be? Can it be on a hand press or stamping press?

Somebody recently put one of the 38 MP HBWC molds for sale in swap and sell. I think it was spoken for, but you might check. I haven't cast with mine yet, but I did make a bunch for my 41 mag, they shot well as plinking loads.

I don't know of anyone who offers swaging dies for 38 HBWC...but they are probaby out there. Typically, swaging dies go for around $400 to $800, and sometimes that requires a heavy duty hand operated bench mounted press, as opposed to a heavy duty reloading press.

I totally agree...I have the two cavity NOE mold and the what h8dirt said, still applies.

MeHic had a group by going for 38, 44 and 45 HBWC, I got all 3.
The pin is on the bottom of the mold.
Makes a good boolit.

Thanks a lot for the information, I am looking at the swaging area lots to learn. But 400 to 800 dies ouch.

I have an older corbins die to make those with.
you swage them upside down and the top punch forms the hollow base and the push pin forms the nose shape.
I cast 358091's first then run them through my .356 lube/size die then swage them up to .358 and finally into the hollow base boolits.
the increase in accuracy at low velocity is almost worth all the work.

I can also make something super similar similar to what's shown by using my core mold and swaging the boolits into shape and rolling the 3 canellures on the boolit before tumble lubing them.

Turning any wc bullet into a hb would be allot easier when swaging but any rn bullet will also work.

Any of the old 1 step herter's/ch 101's/ ch swage presses & dies/herter's 9-ton press & dies will work.

I made a simple home made swage die to use with a harbor freight 1 ton arbor press ($50) that easily turns the lee 311-93-2r rn bullets into 93g hbwc's for the 32cal's. Cast and lube the lee bullets that swage them into hbwc's, 1 pull of the handle ='s 1 bullet.

Nothing more than an old bolt and washer and $1 worth of scrap steal.

hb bullets are sweet in the 38spl's, I currently use/shoot/cast the lyman 358359 hbwc, the lyman 35870 hb rnfp, a raphine 150g hb rnfp & the Mihec 148g hbwc's.

Mihec makes excellent hbwc molds bought the 32cal, 35cal, 41cal, 44cal & 45cal hbwc molds from him. If you can find one buy it.

If they're not Speer 148 HBWC, they're pretty close to being the same thing.
I've shot thousands of Speer 148HBWC's and they are one of the best commercial HBWC's I've found.

And yes, swaged soft lead.

soft lead it may not be...
most swaged boolits have an antimony content as high as magnum shot.
