It was a night of many firsts for me. First time messing with my Lyman 450, first boolits from a Lee 6 cavity, first posted picture:

I was lubing a pile of Lee 102gr 9mm boolits from a casting session a few weeks ago and noticed that I had Jakes Ceresin Scarlet coming out from underneath the casting body and from underneath the sizing die's internal rod. I did get it a bit warm, up to nearly 130 at that point. I walked away for a while and after putting the kids to bed, came back and tried to continue lubing. It did not leak and the lube groove still filled out nicely with the orange color the warm lube should be.

Since this is my first time using this thing, I have no idea if the is the dreaded leaking that can happen from these presses or if I just overheated things and the pressure was pushing lube out...or both. I didn't notice any more leaking from either place after I let it cool to about 95 with the IR thermometer on the lube tube body.

And just because I can now, here's the aftermath:

Yeah they leak some from the bottom ,I use a cereal box to make a gasket of sorts.

130f is kinda warm ,but some of the harder lubes may like 130 , with the loobes I use 110 is as hi as I need & even then like ya say walk away & let it kool a bit sometimes .

But it seems you`ve found your groove for that style of boolit & I see range time in the near future!!!

I have 3 lobe sizers ,2 450s & a Star & while the Star is faster once set up the Lymans are somewhat easier to set up & get going .

Looks as if you have the old style linkage, the new linkage has less handle travel & a bit more substantial linkage.

looks good to me I just hit mine with a heat gun until it feels worm to touch
what can I say it works on all three of my 450's
Hey GP what did that handle kit run you?[smilie=s:

Sounds too hot. If I get mine too hot I back off the pressure to the lube and let it sit for awhile.
That handle looks good. What is the source GP100?

Found the Lyman handle on the Lyman site :)

The purpose of adding heat is just to allow the lube to flow, without excess pressure. Another case of more isn't always better.

When you apply pressure & heat, it's gonna leak a bit. If you are walking away from I, back the pressure off. I do this with my Star while it's heating up, then apply pressure gradually as I start sizing.

I pulled it off and the entire unit was sitting on the aluminum "heater" plate with about an 1/16" of lube between them. With how the lube went everywhere evening, I'm thinking/hoping that I just overheated and over pressurized it. I cleaned it up, considered taking a file to the bottom to level it out, reconsidered, and bolted it back down. I'll try again after I test these boolits and, if I like them, do a few thousand more.

I was just considering going with Hi-Tek and figured I'd give this thing a chance first. Considering a check each bullet individually and would still size them, I can't imagine Hi-Tek would save me any time. I'm hoping this lube will smoke less than tumbled Alox. If it does, I'll be a happy camper!

Think you had the right idea with flat filing the bottom. My 4500 needs it but I've never messed with it. Has a gap under each bolt down lug. I worry some about breaking the casting when torqueing down the bolts.

If you have a vise you could turn the press upside down and clamp it in wood blocks. You could flatten the base out with a 14 inch 2nd cut mill file in just a few minutes. Cast iron cuts fast. You'd not have to go for a 100% cleanup. You'd get better heat conductivity with the base and it would seal up the lube bore.

A belt sander would make short work of roughing it down. Then just a few strokes with a file to make it flat.
