It appears fracking is short for hydraulic fracturing. Wiki article

13 in less than a minute, but I have an argument with "scientists" believing that global warming is caused by CO2.
Same here. Whether or not "Most" scientists believe has nothing to do with establishing anything as a scientific fact, science is not a matter of consebsus of opinion. Also after looking into the methodoly of establishing the magic 97% number i seriously doubt that its an accurate representation.
Even the Warmist have changed their language on this to "active climatologists" rather than "scientists". most meteorologists do not agree with the IPCC.
A yes on that question was not a valid answer, it was the answer I knew they expected.
You'll soon see the result of this backdoor survey being used to bolster the AGW "consensus".

I feel less intelligent for having taken this test.

Deadpool
03-16-2015, 11:27 PM
This test could have been created for a single purpose... To "sell" you on the idea CO2 is solely responsible for the greenhouse effect. Doesn't work so well during a time of global cooling, as seen period after period. When volcanoes erupt, they spew so much more than just CO2, and one moderate sized one has been proven to have a global cooling effect. A big one can cause a nuclear winter. That should put things into perspective. No amount of man-made coal burning or car driving could come close to causing a nuclear winter.

Multigunner
03-16-2015, 11:31 PM
Even this obviously pro AGW article admits.

AMS members are defined simply as "persons having demonstrable professional or scholarly expertise in the atmospheric or related sciences, technologies, applications, or services whether or not this expertise is a source of livelihood." This does not even necessarily mean scientists, which has profound implications in the AMS survey's results: Throughout every area of expertise, the percentage of those who believe humans cause global warming dropped significantly among the respondents who have not published scientific literature in the last five years, down to 37 percent.

http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/11/27/no-daily-caller-a-meteorologist-survey-does-not/197080

So in fact anyone answering that particular question as a yes would have been less accurate than anyone who answered the question as a no.
Some even like to claim that Meteorology is not a science.

12 out of 13. Need to brush up on earth science.

Jack Beauregard
03-16-2015, 11:39 PM
It is actually a pretty clever test to determine the cross section of the american population that has basic knowledge of science and physics. Sure, perhaps only 7% got all questions correct, but 69% (IIRC) got at least half that (from at least 7 correct answers to 13) I take online results with a grain of salt, as even the person who couldn't answer one question correctly on their own knows the power of Google. That's why it was interesting that this project only used the results from the national survey and not the online quiz. Their report is quite enlightening. Remember, just because there were only 7% of respondents who got all questions correct doesn't mean that everyone else got them all wrong.

Thats why it always makes me laugh when they ask if I want nitrogen filled tires.....

There is a legitimate reason for using nitrogen in tires. They are not as sensitive to changing pressures when they get hot. Part of that is a lack of moisture. Compressed nitrogen contains less moisture than air. This is one of those tricks learned in racing, and some forms of racing use nitrogen 100% in their tires. Drag racing some, Nascar most, formula one, 100%.

I got 13 out of 13, and I'm 22. It's not so much the schooling as it is the parents not pushing their kids to learn. They are learning things now in 6th grade that people in the 50s and 60s didn't learn until they were an upperclassman in high school or in college. The sad thing is, they could be learning even more if it was not for standardize tests and common core eating up so much of the school year on BS.

People have the opportunity to get a great education today. Whether they do or not is up to them.

Most people these days don't know that you should never stick a fork in an electric toaster.
Then again I only know that because I once stuck a fork in a toaster.

Some things should be taught in schools , like never pouring cleansers containing chorine bleach into a clogged sink or toliet that you've already put drain cleaner in.
I was amazed to find that at one time (early 1960's) up to 5,000 housewives per year were poisoned by chlorine gas after doing just that.

Schools should teach kids stuff like that early on so it becomes fixed in their minds.

Yup, i rocked out too with 9 outta 13. but hey...someones gotta be "average".

In slight defense my 1st question never showed up on the page, just a "next page" button to hit. It hung me up for a few seconds wondering how stupid did they think i was and smugly advanced to page number two and it wasn't till the end that i realized i'd been cheated. And the climate change agenda question made me vote opposite of what made sense just for spite. So...i'm smarter than i look on paper.. :-o

13 of 13 The one about "most scientists believe" should have been correctly stated as "most climate scientists polled at a global warming conference believe"
To be fair the phrased the question ambiguously. The theory of CO2 as a greenhouse gas is a very old one, its the exageration of its effects that I have a problem with.

The misuse of surveys resulted in the bogus 97% consesus claim, since the questions were phrased in such a way that any belief that CO2 had any effect as a greenhouse gas was interpreted as confirmation of AGW.

The ambiguous term ''Significant" could mean a fraction of 1% to 100% the way they interpreted it.

A similar bogus survey was used a few years back to claim that the vast majority of scientists were atheists. The questions were phrased in a manner that only those with the strictest fundimentalist Christian beliefs would be considered as theists. The vast majority chose not to answer these questions at all. Few other than die hard atheists sent in their questionaire.

In the same manner I expect some AWG alarmists will misrepresent this supposed test to make the claim that 100% of the smartest 7% of the population agree that AGW is real and catastrophic.

The few who make up the "97%" are over represented in the literature, because they basically simply parrot what others have stated, staying in lockstep while changing a few words around to make it appear that they are submitting original works.

Took me less than 2 minutes. I got 12 out of 13 correct which I knew would be the case because I think Pangea is a stupid asinine theory.
If somebody asks me if I think all the continents were once connected, I say "yes I do, and they still are. If you remove all the water out of the oceans, you will notice there is dirt undernieth that spans from continent to continent. A "continent" is simply a high spot in the dirt, and an "ocean" is simply a low spot in the dirt" (to put it in language a kindergartener could understand.)

Plate tectonics is a widely accepted theory because there is so very much evidence in support of it. I say this as someone with a degree in geology. The movement of the continental plates can and actually has been measured.

When you consider the range of people likely included in any poll or study, it shouldn't be surprising that most people don't have a lot of really basic scientific understanding. Think about the average people you know or rub shoulders with day to day. I'm thinking about some older folks I know: good people but couldn't care less about science. I know a lot of twenty-somethings that could tell you all about pop culture, fashion, sports, etc., but who I expect would do poorly on this little quiz. They're not dumb; they just don't care.

Most of those questions were really, really basic knowledge. My 10 year old daughter knew most of them. However, missing some or even a bunch of them doesn't mean a person is stupid, just ignorant of that particular piece of scientific knowledge. Most people focus on what they are interested in and easily forget the rest. No big deal- we all do it.

BTW, I fibbed earlier when I posted that I only got a few (just trying to be funny). I was embarrassed to brag about knowing such basic questions. Now, if someone could find a link to a similar quiz about pop culture, fashion, or something like that, then I'll post my score here and do some bragging about how bad I did. :)

13 out of 13.
I'm a high school graduate and they sent me to special education most of my school years. The classroom was affectionately known as the retard room by all of the wonderful £#×*€ I mean young adults I went to school with! I don't miss school one bit. It seemed like whenever I asked complicated question the teachers did not have the ability to answer I guess. They would tell me look at the book and just look at the example. The examples are only capable of telling one plausible outcome not why it can come out another way they used to get so frustrated with me. I finally one day told a math teacher who didn't seem to care for me much ------- I want you to show me over and over again if necessary not show me some pictures.
After I got out of school I just let my own curiosity be my guide I learned by getting my hands on what I was interested in. And I also learned many things from my elders who were willing to teach me.
