I was rearranging molds the other day and realized I had a bunch of MP brass molds. I have some NOE molds as well. Some RCBS and lee.

How many is too many?

20 MPs, 8 or so NOE, a couple of RCBS left and a couple of LEE.

I didnt think there was such a thing. But then some on here might call it hoarding too.

Whenever I start rearranging... I start discovering duplicates..... and sometimes not just one. http://www.marlinowners.com/forum/images/smilies/new/embarassed.gif

When you stumble across a mold in your shop that you don't remember buying, for a caliber you not only don't reload but don't even shoot...

I have been casting for 30 years and I don't own 30 moulds. I'm very selective about what I buy.

How . . . what in the world are you talking about?

I feel a little faint now. I just might need to lay down. Or go cast some boolits!! :)

No such a thing as too many molds. I simply add more storage space when required. I have been known to add rifles & pistols to my collection simply because I had so much unused brass for that caliber. This is cheaper and more fun than any OCD therapy.

When you find yourself accidentally buying a mold that you already have?

Ok. Thank you. I now know that I still have a long ways to go. What a relief.

Keep on collecting!!!!!!

Ask SWMBO how she knows when she has too many shoes and purses. The answer is the same.

That doesn't work for me...

SWMBO has maybe five pairs of shoes, and I bought her a new purse for Christmas, because I knew she wouldn't spend the money on it herself.

I believe, sir, that you are the proverbial exception to the rule.

I have 5 right now. 2 for my rifle, 2 for my 45 acp and 1 for the 380 acp.

Too many moulds? Too much lead, primers and powder? Too much ammo? Too many spare magazines? Too many guns? Too much money? (In the distant past, too many friendly women?)

Only in my dreams

I tend to agree with this. I have bought out several caster's outfits over the years and just inherited another bunch of molds, most still in the wrappers. I have come to the conclusion that I got into this to make shooting more enjoyable and less costly. Therefore, I would rather spend more time shooting with proven bullets for my guns then experimenting with a whole bunch of options. On the other hand, many of us love to wring out the best from each component so for them, there can never be too much of anything but.............TOO LITTLE TIME.

I'd rather have a couple grand tied up in components than in multiple square blocks that have the same size hole drilled in them.

When you buy one only to discover later that you already have it? I've been casting 50 + years and never had "too many" when I was just shooting BP. Since I started reloading cartridges, I find that I get tempted to add a new one every once in a while "just to try". It's a "sickness" . . . that's all . . . "just a sickness" . . .

I prefer think of them as investments.

Don't know how many I have but it's probably less than two dozen. Definitely not too many as I always "need" at least one more, probably always will. I'm trying to slow down because I don't have the time to play with them all. Just need more time; not fewer moulds.

I had too many(gasp). After casting and experimenting with lots of boolit designs for my pistols for over a year, I found which ones I preferred and which shot/worked the best in my guns. Since that point I have been thinning the herd rather drastically.
Yes it cost a bit of money, but I got most of it back and the experience was priceless.
That is not to say I will not buy another mold if for no other reason than I have not tried that one yet.
It really is a sickness.

Casting is like any hobby. You can put any amount of money into it that you wish. I personally like buying molds. But I'm at the point where I have a backlog of molds I haven't cast w/ yet. I'm finding myself casting w/ them just to log all the details in my spreadsheet. You know you have a good amount when you need a spreadsheet to keep track of them.

Buy a new firearm in a new caliber. Never know what bullet it will like so that means you're buying a few different designs. And you have to hold onto the designs that don't work because you never know when you'll buy one that will like it.

Then of course you have the various bullet weights across a cartridge. Why have only a 115 grain mold for a 9mm? You need at least a 124 and 147. When you really run into trouble is w/ the 357. That's a lot of weights and a lot of different types to cover your bases ;)

There is only one firearm/bullet combination where I only bought a single mold. And that's a 35 caliber rifle w/ the RCBS 200FN bullet. No need for others because that one works to well. Oh wait, I did buy a 230 grain mold because I wanted a heavyweight mold for some reason. And it's a good thing I have all those 357 molds so I can shoot them as plinkers in the 35cal rifles.

I think you see my point

Too many moulds? Is there such a thing? Not in my book. They are an investment in happiness!

I agree.

For me, too many molds is having more than one or two for each firearm. I tend to find one load per firearm and stay with it. It makes my life easier as I don't have to fiddle with sights and learn different trajectory tables and etc. With two exceptions, all my rifles are fed black powder. My handguns are a bit different. Each one has a specific purpose and is fed accordingly.

I have more than I need now but will probably buy more. There is a practical reason though: when you find things that you like and perform well then buy two because TIME has a way of changing it to be something you don't like or eliminates it altogether.

Anything to do with shooting/casting/reloading is particularly vulnerable much more so today than in the past. There's no serious need to elaborate.

I dissagree with everyone here, you have far too many, send any 45, 44, 9mm and 357 caliber MP molds to me imediately for repurposing...

I don't know either . I'd say that you should have a gallery, target and hunting bullet for every caliber you have ,but sometimes different guns don't share bullets so you are forced to try something to fill the void. Now it's just silly to have over a half dozen 9mm/38/357 moulds for 3-4 guns, 45s however have proven fickle so there are 5 for 3 of them ...... wait there are 7 for 38 etc and 5 in 7mm and I only have 3 of those. Never mind I don't belong here. I don't have a problem I can quit anytime I want to ,but nobody likes a quitter.
