I took my 1st attempt at casting today. I think it went well, and I have to thank all of you guys that answered my endless list of questions.

I dropped 20 bullets, and the weights ranged from 140.0 grs to 140.7 grs. Of the 20, 16 of them weighed between 140.4 & 140.6 grs.

Thanks
Scott

Looks like a great start! To prevent those rounded bases, pour a bigger sprue puddle. The sprue plate will heat up after a few casts and they'll square off.

Those bases don't look too bad - what was your alloy?

I was using a mix of 40% rim fire, 30% handgun and 30% rifle.

I was really surprised how well it went, I bought a "Hot Pot II" to give casting a try. It took the 1st 20 or so bullets to get the mold warm enough to get what I posted pics of.

That's a heck of a good start!

Looks a heck of a lot better than my first bullets (although it's likely your frontal lobe is much more developed than mine was at the time. LOL!)
Those bullets will shoot.

I agree with Tim. Your first boolits look much better than my first did! Congrats!

Are you planning to load for .270 Winchester?

Thanks Guys!

I guess now I need to "slug" my barrel so I know what size to size them. I hope my gun likes these (280412's) I've read that some people have had accuracy issues with this bullet.

Now to get them to go BANG! Looks like you done a good job for the first go around. Welcome to the addiction.CD

Yes ....

Reason I was asking, and also seeing that you have picked up on the accuracy issues with the 280412, is that the 270 is quite a challenge to load with cast.

a couple of the older Lyman cast bullet handbooks even state that the 280468 (the Loverin design for the 270) will generally shoot more accurately than the 280412.

i always found the best results when loading the .270 with 10-12 grains Unique.

So what are your thoughts on using the 287405 and sizing it down to .277-.278? This mold seems to be more readily available than the 280468, or any of the 287XXX series molds?

I would do a pound cast to figure out the throat dimensions of the rifle, then measure how much you would need to size down the 287405 to make it fit. Try sizing one down to .278 just to see how much it will deform the bullet. Sometimes it will work. I have the 280468 and would be happy to send you some samples to try.

Thanks, a pound cast is next on my list of things to do. I have four or five bags of samples that MOcaster sent me a while back. IIRC there are some 280468's in there. I have two molds for the 270, the 280412 and 28073 is the other. I picked these up a while ago, before I even really thought about casting, I was just tinkering around when I poured these.

Once the weather clears up for more than 5 hours at a time I'll go put a couple of MOcaster's samples down range to see which ones work best in my rifle.

I have that mold (Ideal rather than Lyman), works great in my 6.8. I haven't loaded any up for my new 270 Encore pistol yet but will soon. I recieved the mold from someone that had issues in 270 as the nose was too small for their liking. This works well for a semi but in the 270 I'll be using them powder coated. I size to .279.

Looking good! Keep it up!

I really don't know what I like better anymore. Making boolits, loading it up or shooting it.
