Should be here @ 8 weeks. Gives me time to cast up some 410610 SWCs, measure the shank to check for proper GAS CHECK fit....

You got my attention, where did you order this? Just recently got into the Contender field with a 10" 30-30 and 10" 41mag. would love to build a carbine...

Eight weeks. He probably ordered it from MGM.
I have often thought about having a barrel made for the 41 mag. to go along with my Ruger SBH Hunter.

What finished length do you envision using the barrel at ?

If he ordered it from MGM, 8 weeks is twice as long as it took me to get my 44 Mag 14". Maybe it's because his barrel is almost twice as long. Ha ha. Daa not funny. The truth is they may still be in the process of moving.

Ordered it from Ed K. $295, plus 15 S&H. Finished length about 23, if it shows up 24, I can live with that. Yes, it is an MGM barrel, which didn't suprise me too much, since Ed lists MGM Contender pistol barrels.

After getting things set up with a scope, I want to try iron sights. I have a Lipksi (?) front sight band and a few FP-TC-TKs I want to try. If it is reasonably accurate, I can pull the barrel band off and drill n tap for a front sight base, .560 on center and 6-48.

After swinging back and forth on the caliber, a few thoughts came up. Small calibers are harder to cast for. Large calibers take more lead. 41 caliber stuff is not as plentiful, but the 210-260 grain boolits should be enough. Everybody has a 357 Max. Gaah.

Expect to use the Lyman 410610 210gr SWC for practice. Paco Kelly (IIRC) has gone to the high side of 300... If this works somewhat well, a 414 SuperMag reamer could be in the future. Expect 150 yard capability with the 41 Mag as-is.

I have seen some js of 170 grain size, Hornady makes XTPs (no FTX, sob, sob, sob)

If you can find some Alliant 300MP buy it. I used it in my Ruger SBH Hunter in 41 mag and it pushed the Saeco 220gr TC boolit over 1,500 fps. Faster than LilGun by about 100 fps and just as accurate. Out of a rifle barrel it should pick up quite a bit of velocity. My guess would be at least 500 fps.

Howdy !

Thanx for the barrel length update.

I asked because...... when having my .357AutoMag " carbine " barrel finished by SSK Industries, JD Jones quizzed me whether I really wanted to finish @ 22". He noted that last couple of inches of barrel length might actually serve to slow the boolits vs a shorter length barrel. I had specified an actual .358" cal barrel, and ended up using WW296 / H110 under
150 - 180gr ( "J"-words ).

I understood JD's point, but still went w/ 22". More for asthetic reason, and knowing I could always cut the barrel shorter later.... if need be.

FWIW.

If you can find some Alliant 300MP

I have a bottle of it, unused. One of the reasons I'm not going 41 SuperMag is I wanna see what the 41 Mag does in a longer tube.

Already looked at the 414 SuperMag reamer. If this configuration is underwhelming (which I doubt) then adding another .350 or so and switching to a slower powder might be useful.

To my suprise, the 414 SM is just .1 longer than the .401WSL old-timer.

No desire to magnumize a supermag, 40K is fine... BUT- if going to the edge of mathochism is desired, I'd consider getting a barrel WITHOUT the drill n tapping for the scope base.

Drilling above the chamber TWICE is not conductive IMHO to safety margin when sneaking up on the next atomic mag catridge.

Either silver solder, expoxy (if it is strong enough), or some sort of a tang sight. I dimly remember a Remington? single shot with the tang sight on a little hump at the rear of the action.

Now you have my attention! I have been a .41 mag shooter for 25+ years, I have an old Marlin lever gun in .41 but have always wanted about a 23" contender barrel as well. Please let us know how it shoots! I have already been talking to Ed about a 22 Hornet as well as the .41.

Was always curious about the 41, used to go hunting with someone that used a 41 Rem mag revolver, S&W (IIRC) and I never thought he was undergunned.

I checked my Nosler manuel, and it annoyingly has the .445 SuperMag, but not the .414 SuperMag. I want to see what they think is a reasonable load for the .414 on the Contender.

You should pick up 400 fps +/-

Midway had the Hornady XTP on sale, so I dropped hammer on a box, and also bought a box of Starline 41 Rem Mag brass.

Wish Hornady had the FTX in .41 available as components....

After thinking about tapers and rolls, I picked up a set of almost new RCBS 18512 dies, still had the second seater stem in the heat sealed bag plus the #30 shell holder.

Laughter through tears. Checked in on Starline today, my horizon is @ 5 months out. If they will probably do a run before then I'll get in line.

BUT... looking through the cartridge conversions, the .303 SAVAGE has a head that's a skosh over the .41 Rem Mag case. Rim diameter and thickness are pretty close.

Now all I'd have to do is find @ 50 .303 Savage brass and...
