Well Folks,
In my attempt to try to shoot all my old centerfire rifles again , that have been stored away, with cast boolits: I decided to try some light loads with my old 336 Marlin my Dad bought for me in 1964 as my first deer rifle. It was my first centerfire firearm. I believe the last time I shot it was back in 1973 (Got a large Doe with it then) . I have recently been pulling all my old rifles out of mothballs and learning how to load & shoot them with cast boolits. By now I have learned a great lot from the folks here on this Forum. ...so I was well prepared when I bought a set of 35 rem dies and honed them out to shoot cast boolits (exclusively). I have lots of cast for my various .38 S&W, .38 Spec and 357 Mag handguns so I thought I would start there. One load I had read about on this forum was using a 125 gr Truncated cone boolit with 5.0 grain bullseye ( Larry Gibson speaks highly of this load in the .35 Rem ; as a light load)

I had a chance to shoot a variety of somewhat lite loads on my first time out shooting cast boolits with this rifle, which I haven't fired since 1973. I shot 358446 semi wad cutters, 358311 RN, Both with my softer BHN 11 alloy , sized .359". I also shot some commercial ( Matt's bullets) 38 S&W RN Hard alloy (.363") as well as some commercial "CB cast bullets" 125 Gr TC @about 18 BHN as advertised.

My own softer cast didn't do really well ( maybe just a bit small at .359") But The Matt's did well! However that darn 5.0 Gr BE with the commercial cast CB brand 125 Gr TC at .360" really did the trick. I'm very excited at my first time out with my ole 336 & cast!
See photos below:

Both targets were 10 shot groups with the load of 5.0 gr BE and the .360" hard cast commercial 125 Gr TC boolit ( the rh target has 3 shots low which was the ideal 358311 boolit)
Red dot Bullseye is 1" dia. these were shot at 50 yds with 4x scope

Great feeling when the results are like that. Good work.

Why shucks, that is pretty good shoot'in and I know it was a heck of a lot of fun.

Only question I got is why did it take you 42 years to shoot the gun again. That borders neglect. Except for one family heirloom, I try to exercise all mine yearly.

Great start, congrats! I agree; what took you so long? There are few finer CB hunting rifles than your 336.

: I decided to try some light loads with my old 336 Marlin my Dad bought for me in 1964 as my first deer rifle. How I would love to have such a memento from my Dad. Well actually I do, in the form of his Mauser 22 that he hunted with. He also hunted with his Dad's 35 Remington pump action (cape buffalo no less!) So the 35 Remington has an appeal to me and I do believe it is a fine calibre.

Lots to get excited about.:2_high5:

Yes, great start. That's what I like especially about cast...the experimenting. Light loads, light boot weights, styles, powders etc. Combinations are endless and will keep me entertained throughout my retirement years.

Nice groups. My Dad left me a old single barrel 12 gauge. I really treasure it but I wish he had a rifle. My Brother in-law asked me if I want the old family 303 Savage in a Savage 99 with a long barrel. I believe it was part octagon. Guess what I said????????? I will believe it when it is in my hands.

Did your Marlin 336 come was Ballard or Microgroove rifling? Not sure if it is the same with the 35 cal but my 375 Win with Microgroove really loves very large cast boolites. .360 plus might be the way to go.

Have fun.

Mine has the micro groove rifling & It seems to like fat boolits.
Why have I not shot it in so long: well by Mid 70's I was trying to plan my life Married my dear wife & life partner in 1977 ( she was also my childhood sweetheart) We worked hard to buy a house and start a family. Guess I gave up hunting during that time & was involved in other interest, hobbies and Art forms! My FIL started me reloading once I got involved in heavy benchrest varmint class shooting in the 80's Then my wife asked why don't you go hunting again? I said if I did it would have be with 18th century firearms only ..that started a new chapter in my life (since I wasn't happy with store bought) So many years past and I tired of the pressures of building custom MLs. Then I found this place & Got hooked on PB cast shooting and now all my old modern ones get a turn again! ( while my ML orders pile up in my shop!)

Jim, When you want a hunting boolit try the RCBS 35-200-FN
My 336 just loves that boolit, but the deer hate it.

My 1957 Microgroove really loves the 190gr Ranch Dog boolit as well! Seems to do fine sized to .359" loaded over H335.

PM me if you'd like to try some RD 359-190's. They're the TL Lee design, haven't upgraded to a NOE mould yet.

I too vote for the 200gr RCBS FNGC for the Marlin 336 in .35Rem.
Not wanting to shoot up all the few 200gr Rem. CorLokts I have left (bulk packed components), and not able to get any more or any other 200gr RN for that matter, I broke down and finally coffed up the $80.00 (shipped) for the molds....

Not looking back,now. Won't ever buy another .35cal j-bullet!!!

Didn't get good accuracy to start with. Only had .358" sizers (and smaller) for .38spl and 9mm.
I finally got a .360" sizer and voila !!! Over 39.0gr of BLC2 (started at 36.0, but groups kept getting tighter the higher I went) I started seeing groups the size of what I get from jacketed rounds... Under 2" at 100yds for 5-shots. Using air-cooled wheel-weights w/2% Tin-antimony lead-free solder added. Sizing .360 in Lyman 450 with SPG, using flat nose punch. Load is running ~2,050fps.

Performance on deer is splendid! Hollow pointed w/- 7/64" x 3/8" hp, they exceed the performance of the Corlokts at ~2,300fp.
It may be 42 more years before I hunt deer in Georgia with anything else...
A Marlin .35rem with a Leupold 2x-7x; it just about dosen't get any better!!!... IMO

roger that, although my 336 shoots everything well, 158grains up to 250 grains. come to think of it, the only other rifle that I have with that trait is another 336 marlin in 30-30.
