I was sifting through Ed's Contender barrels (well, the listed ones) and I didn't see a caliber that did it for me. Finally had to stop lusting after a 41 Mag, because it doesn't appear to have more than 150 yard range for deer before becoming a rainbow gun (always looking for experience to prove me wrong!).

357 / 357 Max - got a few. Rather buy more moulds. 7-30 - got three. 6.8SPC - got one.

Since this forum is a seething mass of curiosity, has anyone heard of a 6.8 / .277 case, based on the 30 Remington, that is longer than the SPC? I like the smaller diameter of the SPC round in the Contender. Wonder if another .250 in case length would give the 110 or 130 J bullets a bit more snap?

SPC right now gives @ 2600 with a 110. What is practible with a case head of .422 and an 85 TTX?

Oh. Don't ask about just going to a .270 in an Encore. Already noticed that T/C made barrels for that. I have a 280 Rem and a 7mm-08. I just like the Contender's weight....

I remember a while ago Mike Bellm was talking about the 6.8. He can machine in a 30-30 rim grove and recut it to a Ackley improved chamber. Now a 277x30-30AI. Not sure how long this is compared to the original 6.8. I was going to have that done to my 6.8 tender barrel until I traded out of it. Kind of wished I had done that but it seemed too close to the 6.5x30-30ai

Keep us posted with what you end up with.

I have thought about it as an accessory barrel for one my Model 8 or 81's, and call it a .27 Remington since they already have a .25, .30, and .32 in those. Basically stretch out the 6.8 to the full length. Lack of brass availability has put it way down on the project list. Converting .30-30 brass for the original 3 is probably enough work for me without adding a wildcat to the mix. Personally, I would just like to have a 25 Remington in a modern rifle. It will do over 3000fps with a 87gr in a 22" barrel bolt action, a little over 2500 with a 120 gr bullet. The nice long neck is real cast friendly as well, or move it forward since a reamer is going to need to be made anyway.

Bullberry and Eabco both make a line of wildcats based on necked down 30-30 cases. Might want to get with them to see what is available. Eabco's "6.5 BRM" is particularly interesting in a Contender. Essentially a 6.5 - 30-30 AI. Could do it in 270 as well if you wanted.
