Hi, has anyone had success forming 8x60 Kropatschek from 8x50r Lebel? Privi 8x50r cases are easily obtainable here in Australia and I'm thinking that there would be less work involved than forming from 348 Winchester. I know I would still have to bevel the rim.

Wouldn't the Lebel be to short, by about 10mm?

From what I can gather the Lebel when fired fills out. I don't want to buy cases until I am sure that this is correct.

8x50R is pretty short. I use .348 Winchester. Turn the rim, which also must be beveled (look at the original 8x60) Some actually modify the bolt, so they won't have to do it. Id rather mess up a piece of brass than a rifle bolt that I might not be able to replace. Then it is fairly simple to size, trim, and load.

348 is the way to go. I set the lathe at the desired angle then chuck the brass. The beveling only takes a few seconds per case.

Thanks for the feed back. Looks like .348 W is the way to go.

I have seen/have bolt gun rimmed brass beveled but was unsure as to why ?
I assumed it had something to do with a round that somehow got it's rim behind the round below it and the bevel let's it ride over it ?

Unsure, that's why I ask.
Thanks........

I think that the beveled base was in use for single shot rifles before the tube magazine made it to Europe. It is hard to see any very compelling reason to have it, or design a rifle to need it, but I agree that the brass you use, you will throw away as worn out any year now, and it is better to modify that than a rifle bolt that will pass on to generations yet unborn.

I formed .348 brass to make substantially the same round for the Portuguese Guedes, which doesn't require the bevel, and didn't get it. The forming job is quite easy, and I could do it in the loading die alone. It is still short, but I could trace no ill effects with hard cast bullets, and with the 8x50R I would be very surprised if there weren't.

The beveled rim is so the round behind in the magazine tilts enough that the bullet tip is off to one side, away from the primer ahead.
