View Full Version : What to make from .308, that's shorter?

Lately when my .308 cases fail, it's been cracks in the neck & shoulder area. Ditto 6.5x55, but mine have the (incorrect) U.S. .30-06 head size, so they almost might as well be failed .308's. (They're just a couple mm longer.) I've got a couple dozen or so in the scrap jar by now.

This being the Case Forming / Re-forming forum, is there any reasonably common & worthwhile case that could be made from neck-cracked .308's and 6.5x55's, by trimming off the bad stuff and forming what's left?

7.92x33 ?

.45 ACP ? :)

(And, would anybody like to have some?)

You might get 22-250 out of some. You might look at the auto mags also I think they were mostly less than 1.35 inches.
You could also look at 45 GAP, ACP,Rolland,Win Mag and rimless variants of Schofield ,Colts and Casull.

I guess it would be safe to say that your basing a new rifle purchase or a re barrel based on what you can do with a couple of dozen split, common .308 cases.
I love the way us handloaders/reloaders think!

Spend $ 500 on a new rifle to save a dollars worth of brass! Thank goodness you save so much money handloading!
Best of luck and congrats on your new rifle!
**(but I hope you realize, that you'll find a gem at the gunshop that's not at all based on the -06 case head. It's just the way it works)**
its no wonder I have so damn many rifles.:veryconfu

Naw he's just thinking it such a waste to throw away brass that is still usable. It has nothing to do with having 06', x55/57,308 and a Savage and a 45 revolver wit a cylinder turned for moon clips....... not that l know anything about that.....

Short .308 cases make very useful and apparently-durable .35 Remington cases. I've done it successfully and the "loading life" so far has extended to at least five reloads per case without losses.

This almost sounds like it would be an interesting contest. "How many different cases can you form out a split neck .308 case?" Hmmmm....

I make .300 Savage brass from .308 Win. brass. I'm not sure if the .308 cracked necks would still leave enough brass for uncracked .300 Savage necks as the .300 Savage neck is pretty short as it is. I would be willing to give it a try though if you want to give them away. I would pay shipping. The 6.5x55 has a slightly larger base than most .30-06/.308 type bases. I don't think there is much you can do with those. shoot me a pm.

OK .357 & 44 Automag, 41JRS, and 45 Winchester Magnum. There's a start.

don't forget 45ACP as well as 6.5 Creedmoor and 22-250 if you have enough neck left after the crack is trimmed off.

If this is the case,(pun intended), does he have enough to qualify for entry in the contest?

7.92x33 mm. Interestingly enough the cases can be made from 7mm BR as well.

And its little sibling the 30 Kurtz(well close to Kurz).
Lot of fun. Form, trim, ream, load and try and find something to shoot it in!

FYI, for the 44 automag, you will need to ream the inside of the brass so it will accept a 44 boolit.

I can hear the excuse now: "Honey, I needed to buy the 44 Automag because I had all these split .308 cases I didn't want to waste......."

Ummmmm ,you mean there's another reason to add a 358 Win than having 100 bad necks and shoulders from 06' and x57's ........ ;)

I was just reading about an AR cartridge , a 45 something that is a 308 cut at 1.9 and amounts to a rimless 460 S&W.
