Every year about this time I look over a bulging gun rack and try and decide what to hunt deer with. Should it be the 86 lever? the 03 sporter? or maybe the old 30-30 with the looong barrel? And once again I take down the old Krag and stuff a few cases with theat big 220 slug and go sight it in. Because I know that chances are when the day comes THAT will be the rifle I grab. An old sporter made in the 1950's from a $15.00 Krag rifle with the barrel cut off at 24 inches. The scope added after the years had dimmed my eyes to where I couldn't hunt after sunset without it. A 220 flat point slug pushed by enough IMR 4895 to give me 1950 fps over the Chrony. This combo has never let me down.
This combo has never let me down.
And it probably never will! :-) A very handsome, no nonsense rig, my complements. JDL

Beautiful Krag!!
I have one looks identical except for the scope. Great guns! Slicker than sn-- on a doorknob.
I have two others need barrels which they will get just as soon as Buckshot finiches my Krag Action wrench.
Both will recieve Springfield barrels. One a 2 groove and one a four groove.

I sure wouldn't mind if you shared the data on that load. I just got a jug of that 4895 and am looking forward to trying it in my Krag.
It looks a LOT like yours, just with the receiver sight instead of a scope. A shame so many of these were sporterized, but back in the day they were so plentiful, and cheap, I guess I can understand why.

i have two krags one original and one sporterized--a few years ago i picked up 500 rds of brass for them and i think out of the 20 or so longguns i own, the orignal krag is my favorite. i shoot 50 or 60 rds a week with it at steel plates set at 150 and 200 yds. i use a 180 gr bullet and 4895 powder. been wondering how you get your avatar (probablt misspelled) from a large picture to the small one
