View Full Version : Marline 1895 45-70 issue

I purchased a marlin 45-70 a few months ago, I have yet had the chance to get out and shoot it. I cast me some Lee 430Gr hot glue bullets to get some trigger time. I loaded them in new Starline brass with flash hole drilled out to 1/8 inch, using LR magnum primer. The problem I am having is about 1/2 are FTF, there is an indention in the primer there is no appreciable noise from the primer however when i extract the shell and remove the glue bullet there is a small amount of pressure in the case and there is sut in the case (These are new cases so it had to be from the primer). Is this a problem with me shooting glue bullets or bad primers or problem with firing pin? Thanks in advance. Will

Maybe the 45-70 case is too big to allow adequate pressure to build and propel the bullet. I've used them in much smaller cases to good effect but never in a case this large.

Should the primer at least make a noise when hit by the firing pen?

Try your primers without the hot glue projectile.

It won't make much of a sound unless the bullet leaves the case.

TXGunNut, perhaps that is the issue. Hopefully I can get out soon and try so regular rounds, was just posting to see if folks thought I should see a gunsmith first. I have shot many glue bullets in 357 and 45 LC and never had this issue.

I sometimes fire "squib" loads when measuring groove and bore diameter. I normally use 0.5 gr Unique and a cast bullet. With a good seal around the case mouth, all you hear is the click of the firing pin, but the bullet winds up a quarter way down the barrel. When you don't have a good seal on the case mouth, you can hear a faint pop. Always exercise extreme caution if you choose to do this and assume your "sqibb" loads are full ​power when you point the muzzle and pull the trigger!

Be sure that your bore is clear!
