I purchased a marlin 45-70 a few months ago, I have yet had the chance to get out and shoot it. I cast me some Lee 430Gr hot glue bullets to get some trigger time. I loaded them in new Starline brass with flash hole drilled out to 1/8 inch, using LR magnum primer. The problem I am having is about 1/2 are FTF, there is an indention in the primer there is no appreciable noise from the primer however when i extract the shell and remove the glue bullet there is a small amount of pressure in the case and there is sut in the case (These are new cases so it had to be from the primer). Is this a problem with me shooting glue bullets or bad primers or problem with firing pin? Thanks in advance. Will

Maybe the 45-70 case is too big to allow adequate pressure to build and propel the bullet. I've used them in much smaller cases to good effect but never in a case this large.

Should the primer at least make a noise when hit by the firing pen?

Try your primers without the hot glue projectile.

It won't make much of a sound unless the bullet leaves the case.

TXGunNut, perhaps that is the issue. Hopefully I can get out soon and try so regular rounds, was just posting to see if folks thought I should see a gunsmith first. I have shot many glue bullets in 357 and 45 LC and never had this issue.

I sometimes fire "squib" loads when measuring groove and bore diameter. I normally use 0.5 gr Unique and a cast bullet. With a good seal around the case mouth, all you hear is the click of the firing pin, but the bullet winds up a quarter way down the barrel. When you don't have a good seal on the case mouth, you can hear a faint pop. Always exercise extreme caution if you choose to do this and assume your "sqibb" loads are full power when you point the muzzle and pull the trigger!

Be sure that your bore is clear!
