I want an M die to open the cases for 358 cast boolits without swaging down.

Is the 9mm M die expander large enough (like 355-356) or should I get the 38 special M die? (or 38 S&W?)

I would rather have a separate die, because I want to switch to a dillon press and if I do, my lee expander wont work. And the dillon funnel is too small.

9mm M die will open case to about .353 the 38 special one has a .356 body. I had a custom powder funnel for my dillion made. Opens the case to .3565 then a step at the top to .360

I spent a lot of time trying to keep 9mm from swaging my boolits down. I found CBC HS brass to be the worst brass for cast. I open the brass to .001 under what i size to.

who made your custom powder funnel? that might be a good option also to keep the powder check die I guess.

Also, what about the MR bulletfeeder powder die? Supposed to be larger than the dillon die, but is it really large enough for 358 cast?

Thanks

When I load up 9mm all I use is a 357 expander die.

The expander plug in the Lyman M-Die I use for 9MM is marked 38AP. I have always interpreted that as 38 Auto Pistol. Anyway it works great. I ordered an expander plug with stem for a Lyman M-die from Lyman for about $6 as I recall about 2 years ago.

I went through this here with another guy a few years ago. We were sorting out Dillon powder measure expander/funnels. For Dillon, the 38 Spl expander was considerably longer that the 9mm one was. We came to the conclusion that it was because the 38 Spl normally uses longer, heavier bullets than the 9mm, so Dillons expander/funnel was shorter in 9mm. It makes sense, but at least for Dillon, a 38 Spl expander would run into the thick web at the bottom of the case.

You might want to investigate the new NOE expander insertss that are made like the Lyman M-die expanders and fit into a Lee Universal expanding die. I think you'll come up the least expensive that way. But I'd order a set of the expanders, not just get one or two. I think they sell the Lee die as well.

Link to the Lee Universal Expanding die at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lee-Precision-Universal-Flaring-Die/dp/B000N8N538

Link to NOE rifle expanders: http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/index.php?cPath=88&sort=2a&page=1&osCsid=uopso37fcld66uo139afr84ld2

Lee die is on second page of NOE rifle inserts, slightly more expensive than amazon, no free shipping, but shipping could be combined with a set of the NOE inserts. Inserts are $6.50 each I believe.

You'll find the price of a part is secondary to the cost of shipping and brokers fees.

oh well, I have found a simple work around for now. I use a 38 special lee powder through die in which I have dropped a bolt to reduce play. So it works with 9mm cases now as an expander only in a free station of my progressive press. Then the 9mm powder through is set to just drop powder not touch flare.
Boolits go in at 357 and are pulled at 357, works #1.

If I ever get a dillon xl650, then I'll probably get the modified powder through funnel to keep expanding and powder at the same station to be able to use the powder check die.

Thanks.
