View Full Version : Lube won't stick!

I combined a stick of Lyman PB Gold and a stick of SPG, added a teaspoon of lanolin and melted everything in a double boiler to pan lube some 300 gr 45/70 boolits. Problem: the lube won't stick to the lead. If I rub the solid lube on each boolit it will stay in the groove, but I don't want to do it that way, for obvious reasons.
Suggestions?

I had the same problem trying to pan lube 44-40 boolits with Len's Lube

Don't know if you tried this, but I've heard that warming the boolits helps the lube adhere.

After the lube has melted in the pan, use a pair of hemostats and stand your bullets in the pan. Usually about 50 at a time.
After about 5 minutes turn off the heat. When the lube starts to solidify...Not hard...Cut the bullets out with an old .308, or 30-06 case cut to just fit over them. Push them out with a short piece of 1/4" wooden dowel.

I knead a small bit of lube in my fingers to soften it then wipe it into the grooves by hand. Works just fine. Then run thru a Lee sizer to remove slight bits of excess lube.
Finger lubing is a great way to lube small numbers of bullets when testing lubes.

Yeah I second warming the lead before and your lube will stick much better

Yeah buddy! I had a friend want to try a few different lubes to see what he wanted to pursue, so I finger lubed a number of bullets with different lubes, then pushed them through my Star to size them. There's no way I would have considered doing this otherwise.

My Lube is primarily bee's wax and wont to stick to a cold boolit. People using a lube that is primarily a grease shouldn't have a problem.
I like the wax, because there is less chance of it melting on a hot day and contaminating the powder. I also throughly clean any lube off of the base of the boolit.
*REMEMBER...BULLET LUBE SPILLED ON KITCHEN SURFACES CAN BECOME INJURIOUS TO YOUR MARRIAGE !!

I do pretty much the same thing, for test batches of boolits.
Only difference being that I often mix BAC and Carnuba Red together by hand (finger kneading) and then wipe a small amount of it into the lube groove or grooves on the boolit.
Then I follow that up with a trip through a Lee push through sizer die to remove the excess lube.
