Just finished installing a Winchester old Marlin peep sight on my Rossi 357. Always wanted one on it and finally got around to it. Actually I traded the rifle off and we both kind of missed the rifles we traded and traded back. Enjoyed shooting the Rossi but really did not know about how to disassembe to install a peep sight. Found instructions for a 92 Winchester and learned that Rossi's are not quite made like 92 Winchesters. First theres the hammer spring which is easy to remove once you notice the little hole drilled in it to stick in a small punch to keep the spring depressed. Then you find out the job could have been done by removing one screw and one pin instead of total dissassembly. Main reason I am talking about this is to relieve the frustration I get on some of these projects where one has to do one to learn how to do one.
Sights on now and it shoots. Actually I was worried about replacing the front sight as it shot very high when I got it, and I ahd to file down the rear open sight, I now have plenty of room for adjustment as it shoots a little low with the 357 mags. Its nice to have something that truly suits me in a fun little rifle. Now just need to find a green fiber optic fron sight that matches it.
Let of a little steam, feel a little better. Spent a lot of time learning stuff I could have gotten by without doing.
No pictures as it looks like a typical Winchester with a Williams receiver sight.

Yep I was worried I would have to replace my front when I put a peep on my 20" 357. Actuall had to raise the peep 1/8th or so to get it to shoot POI at 100 yards with a Saeco 180gr RNFP. How far you from Bemidji? Todd/3leg

About 30 miles from Bemidji. I have a couple of stands that this little rifle might be handy on.

FWIW, I was able to zero my Rossi M-92 with the issue height front sight blade because I used a receiver sight meant for an Angle-Eject Winchester 94, D/T'ing a single hole atop each receiver sidewall.

That sight carries the horizontal aperture bar behind the sight base, allowing the arm to be much lower - almost touching the top of the bolt.

In fact, I had to make a flat-topped bolt-safety replacement plug to enable the sight to ride as low as possible.

Really tempted to make the safety plug like you did, or else glue the thing in place.

It's pretty easy to turn a safety replacement plug, using any round stock and a hand-held power drill.

I used a discarded Remington crossbolt safety as my basic metal, but any round stock would do - even a piece of brass rod.

Here's how:

Here's what the end product should look like:

The bolt safety is held in with a crosspin (reused to retain the replacement plug, in the groove I cut in it) through the bolt's locking lugs recess - use the issue safety lower body as a guide, ensuring the plug is shorter, so as not to interfere with the firing pin.

Will be a project. As I shoot left handed I made a left handed safety for a shotgun using a drill as a lathe. Not really that against those sfeties like the cross bolt in the Marlin, but do seem to get by with older guns that don't have them either. Kind of picture one being on safe when I don't want it to be.

Thread is getting old, but I just finished installing the bolt safety replacement Peep sight from Steve's Gunz. On first installation I found it to be as loose as others have reported. While some have reported the wobble not having a major effect on accuracy, I wasn't about to leave it as is. Having read of the "fix" on some website, I pulled the bolt insert and turned it 90 degrees and filed a new groove, trying and filing until I had a good tight fit of the pin holding the insert in the bolt. Worked perfectly in making the peep non-wobbly. Be a while before I get to take it to the range, but I expect it to work well - much better than the open sights which these old eyes have a problem seeing.

With the video, metal replacement mag follower and a green Fiber front sight (Oct. Bbl), I put over $100 in the new rifle, bringing it closer to what I would have paid locally over the counter for the rifle. But a classic receiver sight would have set me back most of that (or more). And then I'll probably go with a Boyd's Field replacement stock to take the bite out of the crescent steel butt plate when shooting warmer .45 Colt loads. I lucked out and picked up the rifle new for $175 under the local dealer's best price, so the additions will get me to about that price.

Ed, You'll like the peep sight. Both of my Rossi 92s have the same one. My eyes don't cooperate with traditional sights any more. It made a big difference in my groups. My teenage son shoots better with the peep, too. I had to fix the wobble on both of mine, too. I didn't have any elevation issues. I painted the beads red with my daughter's nail polish. You should have seen the look on her face when I asked to borrow it. It's held up well and made the bead much easier to see. The beads cover about 8" at 100 yds. I keep thinking of getting a smaller bead, but haven't done it yet. We don't shoot them that far very often and the large bead works well inside 50 yds.

Does the Rossi need to be drilled and tapped to use the Williams sight?

In a word, yes.

Does the Rossi need to be drilled and tapped to use the Williams sight?

Yes it does. The sights come with 6X48 screws. I have worked over a couple of rifles so I am fairly confident doing this type of work. While I would have to look at it I do not believe they are tapped for the traditional tang sight. Peep sights are getting to be a need for me as to seeing the sights. I also like fiber optic green front sights but have not gotten around to getting one for the Rossi. They could do everyone a favor and D&T them from the factory for that sight as Winchester and Marlin started doing years ago.

I had mine D&T'ed. Then I put a Lyman 66a on it. The Lyman 66 allows for two separate zeroes that are very easily switched back and forth between the two. I run two loads, a practice low-powered load and and high-powered one. Switching back and forth is a snap. Making fine adjustments in the field is a snap. No screw-drivers or coins needed. I have 3 Lyman 66's on my Levers. Love them!

The 24" octagon barrel Rossi's are drilled and tapped for a tang sight from the factory. I had my 20" round barrel Rossi D&T for a tang sight by a gunsmith, and put the Rossi tang sight on it. Nice addition, but unfortunately the Rossi sight appears to be no longer available. Other aftermarket tang sights work well also though.

Thanks. I wish Rossi would D&T them for us but whatever. I wouldnt mind getting a 92 at some point to save wear on my Marlin 1894, of course it woukd have to get a receiver sight before I put a single round through it.

I feel the same way. The stock sights don't do anything for me.

Greetings
I like that Win. Angle eject set up. That would work fine on my 16 inch 45 Colt.

Astigmatism and barrel mounted sights don't get along.
