I have recently acquired this pistol, all the numbers match and it appears to be a 1956 model year. The thing I find odd about it, and I cannot find any other photos quite like it, is that it has no caliber designation on the slide. It has the Arg. crest without a branch designation, other than that the side of the slide is bare. It is a .45 ACP, just surprised that it is not marked anywhere!

Any ideas?

Do a search for "1927 Sistema" and you'll see some of the variation. The Argies had a few different versions, some of which were stamped with "11.25mm" marks.

I have been reading about them on the 1911forum, but all of them are marked with the Sistema stuff and a caliber on the left side, this one is totally bare other than the crest.

It's not at all unusual for military weapons not to have the caliber information stamped on them. The logic in that setting is probably that everybody knows what it is and what it shoots. Sure, there are exceptions like the .30 and 9mm Lugers and C96's; or the P14 / M1917 Enfields. Mausers may have their local flavor stamped on them - maybe not.

In actual adopted-for-service 1911's, the Brits contracted Colt to build in their Webley auto round for WWI, but off the top of my head, that's the only one that wasn't straight .45ACP.

I've got several 1911 collector's guides holding down one of my bookshelves. I get home tonight, I'll see if I can figure out what the distinctions on the Argentine variations are.

OK. . .In one of Clawson's two "lesser" 1911 books Colt .45 Government Model is a picture of the gun that came off the line 18 serial numbers before yours. States the it was of a batch of 1000. guns that shipped to the Argentine navy on October 15, 1955. Mine's a few hundred below yours, but in that same shipping lot and has the same marks.

Interesting, mine does not have the branch stamped on it either. I am trying to decide what to do with it, sell it, add some drop in parts and shoot it or just put it in the safe. Mine has no import marks, about 70% bluing left and looks pretty good. No armory refit stamps either.

I am almost tempted to sell it and find my CZ rifle in 221 fireball or a good hornet.

Thanks for the info!
