I am picking up a set of 30 cal dies from a swager that has a 10s and a 6s ogive. This got me thinking. I want to get a 30-30 soon, maybe I should buy a point forming die from RCE or Brian and I am not sure what ogive to go with. I know that Richard is working on 30 cal dies soon so figured might want to jump on that right away before his wait is a year or better.

30-30 ..... lever action? Safety says you need a flat point to the bullet (meplat) at least the size of the primer...... Yes?

Maybe just use a punch to make a flat point with the 6s die than?

should work.

Factory Winchester .30-30 softpoints have a .155" diameter meplat, which is as small as you should go for large primer in a tube magazine.

I am wondering on some of those soft points, i know remington has the core-lok ammo that way as well as nosler

they factor in that the rim of the case will make the bullet lay down on the bottom of the mag tube.
then they make the ogive of the bullet so it will lay flat on the tube too so the point is below the primer.

I have shot literally thousands of RN bullets in a 30-30. As long as the meplat is significant or you have a fairly blunt RN, you're not going to have a problem. In fact, I think a chainfire event is extremely unlikely for the reason that R5R just "pointed out" (pun intended).
All the cartridges are laying in the magazine tube, and the likelyhood of one of them magically jumping up and centering perfectly on the primer, and then getting hit with enough force to set it off is pretty darn slim.
The only bullets I would worry about (and refuse to load in my 30-30) is true spitzers with a small, hard point.
However, the reason for this is much more of a question of practicality than safety. Most tube-fed 30-30s cannot cycle a pointed bullet in the first place. The nose gets stuck in the tube and the carrier cannot lift the cartridge and guide it into battery.
Best to just stick to your quintessential lever bullet designs.
I think if it were me, I would just use more core, form up an extra heavy 6s and take a stroke off the nose with a file to form a quick FP. No muss not fuss.

Factory are (were) round or hollow point and never an issue. Much ado of nothing. -tj

would this be safe in a 30-30 ?

the flat nose seems kinda small but should be aerodynamic for a 30-30 boolit or a good bc.. what say you ?
