I have a Winchester Model 1892 in 44 Mag. I have started reloading 300 grain hard cast boolits (Brinnel mid 20s) recently. I'm getting good groups with 19 grains of IMR 4227. My velocity is ~1400 fps. Any risk of leading at this speed?

Thanks! I'm new to the world of cast boolits!

Is there leading g in your bore? There is always a risk of leading boolit to bore fit, vilosity, lube, crimp, the makeup of alloy , bhn. Are you using a gas check? Shoot and see is the only hard and fast rule. No magic "boolit" here. I shoot a 310 grain Lee out of a 94 .44 get great accuracy, this boolit sized to.4312 in a Lee sizer I bored out I don't get leading. I have been powder coating them but no leading before that either. Bore slugged at .4305. I use a gas check with full house h110 loads but I've shot some with out and didn't notice any leading either. Same boolit in my black hawk needs the gas check or leading is evedient right away; 10 shots or so.

Thanks! I will see how it goes. Lots to learn for sure! I'm hoping to shoot a bear this spring with my 44.

Welcome to the forum - nagantguy has it right about centuries of knowledge - I've learned a bunch here.

You said hardcast - from what I've seen that may be the lowest factor in the equation. What does your bore slug at? Are you using a gascheck? And last, what size does your 300 grainer cast at?

The sizes may determine more about leading, the gascheck can forgive some error on sizes, but not if it's too hard.

I'm loading 17gr IMR4227 behind 200, 240, and 300 grain slugs without leading (BHN 15). All in a WIN '92 44 Mag. Couldn't get the 300 grainer to group as well for some reason, but leading wasn't the issue.
